The ASUS ZenWiFi BD5 is a dual-band WiFi 7 router that works on its own or as part of an AiMesh network with other compatible ASUS routers. ASUS rates this single unit for up to 2,500 square feet (about 230 square metres). This page explains what the WiFi 7 features and ports mean, and what to check at home before choosing it.

What dual-band WiFi 7 means

A dual-band router uses two radio bands, 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The 2.4GHz band reaches farther but is slower and busier. The 5GHz band is faster over shorter distances. Unlike tri-band WiFi 7 models, this router does not add a 6GHz band, so it is a simpler design that still brings the newer WiFi 7 features to the bands it has.

ASUS quotes speeds up to 5,000 Mbps (5 Gbps). That is a theoretical combined figure; a single device will usually see less, depending on distance, walls, the device's own WiFi hardware and your internet plan.

MLO and 4K-QAM

The listing names two WiFi 7 features:

  • MLO (Multi-Link Operation) lets a compatible device send data over both bands at once, which can improve reliability and reduce delays.
  • 4K-QAM encodes more data in each signal, raising peak speed at close range.

Only WiFi 7 devices gain from these. Older phones and laptops still connect at their own speeds.

Coverage and AiMesh

ASUS rates one BD5 for up to 2,500 sq. ft., using four internal antennas and four high-power front-end modules to reduce dead zones. Real coverage depends on building materials and layout. With AiMesh you can add more compatible ASUS routers later and have them act as one network with a single name.

Ports and processing

The BD5 has dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports with auto detection. These exceed standard gigabit speed, which suits fast internet plans, network storage or a wired link between mesh units. Inside is a quad-core 1.5GHz CPU with cooling intended to keep it running steadily.

Security and home controls

ASUS includes AiProtection Pro, which it describes as commercial-grade, 24/7 protection, plus VPN options and parental controls. Smart Home Master SSIDs let you put smart-home devices on a separate IoT network, which helps keep them apart from your computers and phones.

Size

The router measures about 5.5 x 2.8 x 5.5 inches (14 x 7 x 14 cm) and weighs 1.2 lb (about 0.55 kg), so it is easy to place on a shelf.

Who it suits

It suits homes and flats of moderate size, households with several WiFi 7 or WiFi 6 devices, and people who want fast wired ports and the option to grow into a mesh. If you need the extra 6GHz band, look at tri-band models.

What to check before you buy

  • Your internet service: confirm your plan's speed and which port on your modem connects to the router.
  • Your devices: WiFi 7 gains need WiFi 7 clients.
  • Coverage: think about your home's size, floors and wall materials, and whether a second unit would be needed.
  • Mesh partners: check which ASUS routers are AiMesh compatible.
  • Setup: ASUS uses a phone app, so confirm your phone is supported.
  • Placement: central, open positions generally work better than inside cabinets.

The short version

  • A dual-band WiFi 7 mesh-capable router rated for up to 2,500 sq. ft. in one unit.
  • Speeds up to 5,000 Mbps combined, with MLO and 4K-QAM.
  • Dual 2.5G Ethernet ports and a quad-core 1.5GHz CPU.
  • AiProtection Pro, parental controls, VPN and Smart Home Master SSIDs.
  • Extends with compatible ASUS routers through AiMesh.
