The ASUS ZenWiFi XD6 is a mesh WiFi 6 system designed to remove dead zones in a home. This one-pack version in white is a single unit that works as a router on its own, and ASUS says it covers up to 2,700 sq ft and four or more rooms. It can also grow into a larger mesh with other compatible ASUS devices. Here is what the specs mean.
What mesh WiFi does
A conventional router sends a signal from one spot, and distant rooms often get a weak connection. A mesh system uses several units that work together as one network, so your devices move between them without you having to switch networks manually. The XD6 is sold here as a single unit, which gives you the router itself. ASUS says its antenna placement is designed to deliver a strong signal through the home.
WiFi 6 and the 5400Mbps figure
WiFi 6 (802.11ax) is a newer WiFi standard than WiFi 5. In general, it handles many connected devices at once more efficiently, which suits homes full of phones, laptops, TVs and smart-home gadgets. The XD6 is dual-band, using 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
ASUS gives a total wireless speed of 5400Mbps. This is a combined figure for both bands, not the speed any single device will see. ASUS's own disclaimer says actual throughput and coverage vary with network traffic, building materials and construction.
AiMesh: mixing and matching
AiMesh is ASUS's system for linking compatible ASUS routers into one network. ASUS says the XD6 can be combined with AiMesh-compatible routers, so you can start with one unit and add more later, or reuse a compatible router you already own.
Setup and daily management
ASUS describes setup as three steps through the ASUS Router app, which also handles day-to-day management. For a home user, app-based setup usually means no need to open a browser and type in an address.
Security and parental controls
ASUS includes cloud-based internet security powered by Trend Micro, which it describes as free for life. Parental controls include a URL filter and scheduling, which ASUS says help protect family members from inappropriate content and set limits on online time.
Physical details
The unit measures about 5.1 x 5.0 x 2.3 inches (13 x 12.7 x 5.8 cm) and weighs about 1 lb (0.45 kg). The power adapter takes 110 to 240V and outputs 12V at up to 2A.
What to check before you buy
- Home size and layout: 2,700 sq ft is ASUS's maximum figure, and walls and floors can reduce it. A single unit is a router, so larger homes may need additional AiMesh units.
- Internet connection: check that your modem supplies a standard Ethernet connection and what speeds your service provides.
- WiFi 6 devices: older devices still connect, but only WiFi 6 devices get the full benefit.
- Wired devices: check the number and speed of Ethernet ports for your needs.
- Existing router: if you plan to use AiMesh, check that your other router is on ASUS's compatibility list.
- App and account: setup uses the ASUS Router app on a phone.
The short version
- A white single-unit dual-band WiFi 6 mesh system rated at 5400Mbps combined.
- ASUS cites coverage of up to 2,700 sq ft and four or more rooms.
- Works with other AiMesh-compatible routers to expand.
- Setup through the ASUS Router app, with parental controls and Trend Micro security.
