The ASUS ZenWiFi XD4 Plus is a mesh WiFi 6 system that replaces a single router with several small units spread around your home. Together they form one network, aimed at removing dead zones in houses where one router can't reach every room. ASUS lists coverage of up to 4,800 sq ft and a total wireless speed of 1800Mbps.

How a mesh system differs from a router

A single router sits in one place, and signal weakens with distance and with walls, floors and appliances in between. In a mesh system, the units, called nodes, talk to each other and share one network name. Devices connect to whichever node gives the best signal as you move through the house. The model code W-3-PK suggests a three-pack, so confirm the pack size you are buying.

What AX1800 and WiFi 6 mean

AX1800 is a speed class that adds up the maximum speeds of the two bands: roughly 574Mbps on 2.4GHz and 1201Mbps on 5GHz, in typical AX1800 designs. It is dual-band, so the 2.4GHz band reaches farther and the 5GHz band is faster at shorter range. No single device will see the 1800Mbps figure. ASUS also notes that actual throughput and coverage depend on network traffic, building materials and construction.

WiFi 6 (802.11ax) improves how a router handles many devices at once, which helps in homes full of phones, laptops, speakers and cameras. ASUS says the system suits 25 or more devices. Your own devices need WiFi 6 support to get the full benefit, though older ones still connect.

Setup and the ASUS Router app

ASUS says setup takes three steps using the ASUS Router app, which also handles management afterwards. Parental controls are listed with the system. The main restriction is that your internet connection comes first: the system distributes the speed your provider delivers, and it doesn't increase it.

AiMesh

The system supports AiMesh, ASUS's technology for linking compatible ASUS routers into one mesh. ASUS says you can mix and match ZenWiFi units with AiMesh-compatible routers, so you can expand later or reuse an older compatible router. Check ASUS's compatibility list before you plan a mixed setup.

Built-in security

ASUS lists subscription-free, cloud-based security powered by Trend Micro, intended to protect connected devices, and describes it as always up to date. Check the current terms for what it includes.

Placement and size

Each unit is compact, about 3.5 x 3.5 x 3.3 inches and 0.7 lb (about 0.3 kg). They can stand on a shelf, or be hung with the hanging holes and screws in the box. In general, mesh nodes work best placed in the open, centrally and not too far from each other, rather than hidden in cabinets or in a far corner.

Who it suits

It suits medium to large homes, multi-storey houses and homes with thick walls, where one router leaves weak areas. It also suits households that like to manage a network from a phone.

What to check before you buy

  • Home size and layout: coverage claims are maximums; walls and floors reduce them.
  • Internet speed: check your plan, since AX1800 is aimed at moderate-to-fast home connections.
  • Wired backhaul: if your house has network cabling, see in the manual whether the nodes can use it.
  • Modem: the system normally connects to your modem or gateway, so check for a free Ethernet port.
  • Devices: note which of yours support WiFi 6.
  • AiMesh: if you want to add an existing router, check compatibility.

The short version

  • A dual-band WiFi 6 mesh system, AX1800, with coverage up to 4,800 sq ft per ASUS.
  • Three-step setup and management through the ASUS Router app.
  • AiMesh support for mixing with compatible ASUS routers.
  • Subscription-free security by Trend Micro, parental controls.
  • Compact nodes that stand or wall-mount.
