The ASUS ZenWiFi Pro ET12 is a tri-band Wi-Fi 6E mesh router, sold here as a single unit (1-pack). ASUS describes it as a new paradigm for whole-home mesh Wi-Fi, combining performance and design. You can use it alone as a high-end router, or add more ZenWiFi units to extend coverage across a larger home.

What Wi-Fi 6E and AXE11000 mean

Wi-Fi 6E extends Wi-Fi 6 into the 6GHz band, adding spectrum beyond the usual 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. ASUS says this significantly increases network capacity for more devices. The 6GHz band is typically less crowded, but its signal is shorter-ranged, and only devices with Wi-Fi 6E support can use it.

AXE11000 is a combined figure: it adds up the theoretical top speeds of all three bands. ASUS cites speeds of up to 11,000 Mbps. No single device will see that number, and real throughput depends on your device, distance, walls and internet plan.

Coverage and RangeBoost Plus

The listing title gives whole-home coverage of up to 3,000 sq ft and 4+ rooms for one unit, while the feature list mentions extended coverage of up to 6,000 square feet with ASUS RangeBoost Plus, which ASUS says improves Wi-Fi range by up to 38%. The two figures likely reflect different configurations. ASUS also notes that actual throughput and coverage vary with network conditions, building materials and construction, and traffic.

Ports and mesh

Dual 2.5G ports are listed. A 2.5G port can carry more than the common 1Gb wired connection, which is useful for fast internet plans or a wired link to a network drive, as long as the connected device supports 2.5GbE. AiMesh is ASUS's system for linking compatible ASUS routers into a single network, so you can start with one unit and expand later. Check the ASUS site for compatible models.

Security and parental controls

ASUS lists AiProtection Pro, powered by Trend Micro, as commercial-grade and subscription-free, with a one-tap security scan and Safe Browsing. The listing title also states included lifetime internet security.

Advanced Parental Controls offer instant monitoring, content filters and custom settings for each connected device, per ASUS. Whether they suit your family depends on how you manage devices at home; the details are in the app and manual.

For remote use, there are comprehensive VPN features, including the Instant Guard mobile app, which ASUS says provides a secure connection over public Wi-Fi.

Setup

The listing calls it easy to set up. Mesh routers generally use a phone app that walks through connecting to your modem and naming your network.

Who it suits

It suits larger homes, homes with many connected devices, and anyone with Wi-Fi 6E phones, laptops or consoles who wants the 6GHz band. People with a fast wired internet plan will also appreciate the 2.5G ports. For a small apartment with few devices, a simpler router is often enough.

The unit measures about 4.5 x 4.5 x 9.5 inches and weighs 3.3 lb (1.5 kg).

What to check before you buy

  • Your devices support Wi-Fi 6E; older ones will use the 2.4GHz or 5GHz bands.
  • Your internet plan and modem: you will usually connect this router to an existing modem.
  • Whether one unit covers your home, or you'll add a second.
  • Your wired devices support 2.5GbE if you want that speed.
  • Free space for a tall unit with airflow.
  • Which security and parental features need an app or account.

The short version

  • Tri-band Wi-Fi 6E mesh router rated AXE11000, with a 6GHz band.
  • Dual 2.5G ports and AiMesh support for expansion.
  • AiProtection Pro by Trend Micro, subscription-free, with parental controls and VPN features.
  • Coverage depends on your home: ASUS gives figures up to 3,000 sq ft, and more with RangeBoost Plus.
