The ASUS ZenWiFi BT8 is a tri-band WiFi 7 mesh unit meant to cover a whole home. This listing is for a single unit, which ASUS rates for up to 3,000 sq. ft. (about 280 square metres) and which can be expanded later with compatible ASUS routers through AiMesh.
What WiFi 7 and 14 Gbps mean
ASUS quotes speeds of up to 14 Gbps across three bands, including 6 GHz. That figure is the combined theoretical maximum across all bands, not what a single device receives. WiFi 7 adds Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which lets a device use more than one band at once, and 4K-QAM, which packs more data into each transmission. Both help most when your phones, laptops and other devices also support WiFi 7. Older devices still connect, but without those gains.
Coverage and antennas
The BT8 has seven internal antennas and eight high-power front-end modules, which ASUS says help remove dead zones. Coverage depends heavily on walls, floors and layout, so 3,000 sq. ft. is a figure for open conditions. Smart AiMesh is ASUS's mesh system: units join into one network with one name, and devices move between them. ASUS says compatible ASUS routers can be added for more reach.
Wired connections
Two 2.5G Ethernet ports are included. A 2.5G port is faster than standard gigabit Ethernet, which helps with a fast internet plan, a network storage device or a wired backhaul link between mesh units. Wired backhaul usually leaves more wireless capacity for devices.
Security and household controls
ASUS lists AiProtection Pro, described as commercial-grade, with 24/7 end-to-end protection and advanced VPNs. Parental controls and an IoT network are included. The Smart Home Master SSIDs feature is meant to ease setting up separate networks for smart-home devices and VPN use on multiple devices. Features like these are configured through the ASUS app or web interface.
Mobile tethering
The unit supports 4G LTE and 5G mobile tethering, so a compatible phone can supply internet as a backup connection or when no wired service is available.
Size
The listing gives 7.3 x 2.8 x 6.3 inches and 1.9 lb, so it's compact enough to sit on a shelf in a central spot.
Who it suits
It suits larger homes or multi-floor layouts with fast fibre or cable service, a growing number of WiFi 7 devices, and a wish for built-in security tools.
What to check before you buy
- Check that your internet service speed and modem match the 2.5G port.
- Think about home size, building materials and whether a single unit is enough.
- Check which of your devices support WiFi 7 or 6 GHz.
- Confirm whether you want to add other ASUS routers through AiMesh.
- Look at how the unit is powered and where you can place it centrally.
- Read the manual for which security features need an account or subscription.
