The ASUS ZenWiFi BT6 is a tri-band WiFi 7 router that can work alone or as part of a mesh with other compatible ASUS routers. This single-unit pack is rated by ASUS for up to 3,000 square feet (about 280 square metres). Here is what the WiFi 7 features mean for a home network and what to confirm before choosing it.

What tri-band WiFi 7 adds

A tri-band router has three radio bands: one at 2.4GHz, one at 5GHz and one at 6GHz. The 6GHz band is a newer, less crowded stretch of spectrum that typically offers faster, steadier connections to devices that support it, though with shorter range through walls. WiFi 7 devices can use it, and so can WiFi 6E ones.

ASUS quotes speeds up to 14 Gbps in its feature list and 9.4 Gbps in the product title. These are theoretical totals across all bands, not what one device will see. Real speeds depend on distance, walls, the device's own WiFi hardware and your internet plan.

MLO and 4K-QAM

Two WiFi 7 features are named in the listing:

  • MLO (Multi-Link Operation) lets a compatible device use more than one band at once, which can improve reliability and reduce delays.
  • 4K-QAM packs more data into each radio signal than older WiFi generations, which raises peak speed at close range.

Both only help devices that support WiFi 7. Older phones and laptops still connect, but they use their own, slower standards.

Coverage and mesh with AiMesh

ASUS says the single unit covers up to 3,000 sq. ft., using seven internal antennas and eight high-power front-end modules. Coverage figures are approximate and depend on building materials and layout. The router supports AiMesh, ASUS's system for linking compatible ASUS routers into one network, so you can add units later if one isn't enough.

Wired and extra connections

The BT6 has dual 2.5G Ethernet ports, which allow a wired link faster than standard gigabit and give a fast backhaul between mesh units. It has a 2.5G WAN port, useful if your internet service is faster than 1 Gbps. ASUS also lists 4G LTE and 5G mobile tethering, so a phone's connection can serve as a backup if your main line drops.

Security and home controls

ASUS includes AiProtection Pro, which it describes as commercial-grade protection, along with VPN options and parental controls, at no extra subscription as listed. Smart Home Master SSIDs let you put smart-home gadgets on a separate IoT network, a common way to keep them apart from your computers and phones.

Size

The unit measures about 7.3 x 2.8 x 6.3 inches (18.5 x 7 x 16 cm) and weighs 1.9 lb (about 0.9 kg).

Who it suits

It suits larger homes with several WiFi 7 or WiFi 6E devices, households with a multi-gigabit internet connection, and anyone who wants a network they can extend later. A small flat with only older devices would use few of its features.

What to check before you buy

  • Your internet service: check the speed you receive and whether your modem has a port that suits the 2.5G WAN connection.
  • Your devices: WiFi 7 gains need WiFi 7 clients; 6GHz needs WiFi 6E or newer.
  • Coverage: consider your home's size, floors and wall materials, and whether you'd add a second unit.
  • Mesh partners: check which ASUS routers are listed as AiMesh compatible.
  • Setup: ASUS uses a phone app for setup, so confirm your phone is supported.
  • Model name: the listing text refers to a BT8 in places; confirm you have the BT6 you want.

The short version

  • A tri-band WiFi 7 mesh-capable router rated for up to 3,000 sq. ft. in a single unit.
  • 6GHz, MLO and 4K-QAM; ASUS quotes speeds up to 14 Gbps combined.
  • Dual 2.5G Ethernet ports, a 2.5G WAN port and 4G/5G tethering.
  • AiProtection Pro, parental controls, VPN and Smart Home Master SSIDs.
  • Extends with compatible ASUS routers through AiMesh.
