The ASUS VivoBook S15 S533 (model S533EA-DH51-RD) is a 15.6-inch laptop designed to be slim and light for its screen size. It pairs an 11th-generation Intel Core i5 with a fast SSD in a metal body, finished here in Resolute Red. It is meant for everyday computing at home, school or the office rather than demanding games.

The processor

The Intel Core i5-1135G7 is a quad-core processor from Intel's 11th generation, listed with a cache of 8MB and a boost speed of up to 4.70 GHz. It is a power-efficient design for thin laptops, suited to browsing, documents, video calls, streaming and light photo editing. It uses Intel's integrated graphics rather than a separate graphics card, so it is not intended for demanding modern 3D games.

Memory and storage

The laptop has 8GB of DDR4 memory, which comfortably handles everyday multitasking, though many browser tabs together with other programs may call for more. Storage is a 512GB PCIe SSD, which makes starting up and opening programs quick. Windows 10 Home is installed.

The display

The 15.6-inch Full HD NanoEdge display has very slim bezels and an 86% screen-to-body ratio, per ASUS. This means more of the front is screen, so the laptop is more compact than the screen size suggests. The aspect ratio is 16:9. Full HD is a good match for documents and video at this size.

Build and design

The chassis is metal and just 16 mm thick at its thickest, with a weight of 4.0 lb (about 1.8 kg) and dimensions of about 14.2 x 9.2 x 0.6 inches. ASUS describes diamond-cut edges, a textured finish and an Enter key with colour-blocking edges. The VivoBook S15 comes in four colours.

Keyboard and sign-in

The ergonomic keyboard is backlit, which helps in dim rooms. A fingerprint sensor works with Windows Hello, so you can sign in with a touch instead of typing a password. ASUS also notes that actual USB 3.0, 3.1, 3.2 and Type-C transfer speeds vary with the host device, the files and the system setup.

Wi-Fi

The laptop supports Wi-Fi 6, which works best when paired with a Wi-Fi 6 router, and connects to older routers as well.

Who it suits

It suits students, remote workers and families who want a larger screen in a slim, portable body for everyday tasks. It is a poorer fit for gamers or for video editing with heavy effects.

What to check before you buy

  • Ports: check the manual or ASUS website for the exact port list and whether it matches your accessories and displays.
  • Memory: 8GB suits typical use; check whether it can be upgraded if you need more.
  • Operating system: it ships with Windows 10 Home; check upgrade options and support dates on Microsoft's site.
  • Battery: confirm the battery details on ASUS's product page for your expected use.
  • Screen: Full HD is clear at 15.6 inches, but the listing doesn't give brightness or colour accuracy figures.
