The ASUS Vivobook S 14 OLED, model M5406WA, is a thin 14-inch laptop built around an AMD Ryzen AI 9 processor and a 3K OLED screen. It pairs 24GB of memory with a 1TB SSD and weighs 2.87 lb (about 1.3 kg). It is aimed at people who carry a laptop daily and want a sharp display and room for AI-assisted features.
The 3K OLED display
The screen is 14 inches at 2880 x 1800 with a 120Hz refresh rate. ASUS calls it the Lumina OLED and lists a 0.2 ms response time, up to 600 nits of peak HDR brightness and 100% DCI-P3 colour coverage.
In general terms, OLED pixels make their own light, so black areas can be truly dark and contrast is high. DCI-P3 is a wide colour space used in cinema and many modern phones, so 100% coverage suits photo and video work. A 120Hz refresh rate redraws the picture twice as often as a 60Hz screen, which makes scrolling and cursor movement look smoother. The 16:10 shape adds height compared with a 16:9 laptop screen.
Processor, memory and the NPU
ASUS says the processor is an AMD Ryzen 9 with an NPU rated at 45+ TOPS. An NPU is a dedicated chip for AI tasks such as background blur on video calls or on-device transcription, so those jobs use less of the main processor. The laptop ships with Windows 11 Home and a dedicated Copilot key for the AI assistant.
The 24GB of LPDDR5X memory is generous for a thin laptop. It leaves headroom for many browser tabs, office software and light creative work together. LPDDR5X is typically soldered to the board, so it is normally not upgradeable later. The 1TB SSD gives plenty of room for files and apps.
Thin, light and long-lasting
The body is 0.63 inches (about 1.6 cm) thick. The description mentions up to a 75 Wh battery. Battery life depends on screen brightness, refresh rate and workload, so treat any hour figure as a guide.
Keyboard, camera and connections
The keyboard has single-zone RGB backlighting with adjustable colour, mode and brightness, plus an extra-large touchpad. An ASUS AiSense camera is also listed.
Ports listed:
- 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A
- 1 x USB4 Type-C (Gen 3), supporting display and power delivery
- 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C, supporting display and power delivery
- HDMI 2.1 (TMDS)
- Micro SD card reader
- 3.5 mm combo audio jack
Who it suits
Students, travellers and professionals who want a portable machine with a bright, colourful screen will find it fits. It also suits people who edit photos and video on the move, or who want to try the AI features that Windows now includes. It is a lighter-weight machine rather than a dedicated gaming or workstation laptop.
What to check before you buy
- Charging: confirm what charger is supplied and how it connects, as several of the Type-C ports handle power delivery.
- Port mix: there is no full-size SD slot or Ethernet port listed. A dock or adapter may be needed.
- Screen finish: OLED panels can be glossy. Think about your usual lighting.
- Software: check which AI features need an account or an internet connection.
- Memory: since it is typically soldered, make sure 24GB is enough for your needs.
- Size: compare 14 inches with the bag or desk you will use it with.
