The ASUS Vivobook 17X K3704VA is a large-screen laptop with a 17.3-inch Full HD display and a 13th-generation Intel Core i9 processor. It is aimed at people who want a roomy screen and strong multitasking for work, study or home use.

The processor

The Intel Core i9-13900H runs at 2.6 GHz and, according to ASUS, boosts up to 5.4 GHz. It has 14 cores and 20 threads with a 24MB cache. In general, more cores and threads help when many programs run together or when apps such as video editors can spread work across them. Graphics come from Intel Iris Xe, an integrated design that handles everyday video and light creative work but is not a dedicated gaming card.

Memory and storage

The laptop has 16GB of DDR4 RAM, made up of 8GB on board plus an 8GB SO-DIMM module. The SO-DIMM suggests one slot may be user-accessible, though you should check ASUS's documentation before upgrading. Storage is a 1TB PCIe 3.0 SSD, which typically loads the system and apps far faster than older hard drives.

The 17.3-inch screen

The display is 16:9 Full HD (1920 x 1080) with thin NanoEdge bezels and an 86% screen-to-body ratio. A bigger panel gives more room for side-by-side windows and spreadsheets. The trade-off is size: the laptop measures about 15.7 x 10.0 inches, is 0.8 inches thick and weighs 4.6 lb.

Ports and wireless

ASUS lists one USB 2.0 Type-A, one USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, one HDMI 1.4 and a 3.5mm combo audio jack. Wireless is Wi-Fi 6E (dual band) and Bluetooth 5.3. Wi-Fi 6E's extra band needs a compatible router to use.

Everyday features

ASUS lists a privacy webcam shutter, a backlit chiclet keyboard and a fingerprint reader that works with Windows Hello for sign-in. It also lists AI noise cancelling, which the brand says uses machine learning to separate speech from background noise, and a 180° lay-flat hinge. The laptop is listed as meeting US MIL-STD 810H, a military test standard rather than a guarantee against damage.

What to check before you buy

  • Size and weight: at 4.6 lb and 17.3 inches, it is more a desk-and-bag laptop than an ultralight.
  • Ports: Thunderbolt and HDMI 2.1 are not listed, so check your monitors and accessories.
  • Graphics needs: integrated graphics may not suit demanding games or 3D work.
  • Memory: confirm whether you can add more RAM, and how.
  • Wireless: Wi-Fi 6E benefits need a compatible router.
  • Battery life: check ASUS's figures and expect them to vary with use.
