The ASUS VivoBook 16 M1605YA-ES74 is a 16-inch everyday laptop built around an AMD Ryzen 7 7730U processor. It has a tall 16:10 screen, a 1TB solid-state drive and Windows 11 Home. It is meant for study, office work, browsing and media, in a body ASUS describes as sleek and lightweight.
The screen
The display is 16 inches at WUXGA (1920 x 1200) with a 16:10 aspect ratio. Compared with the common 16:9 shape, 16:10 gives extra vertical space, which helps with documents, spreadsheets and web pages because more lines fit on screen. ASUS lists ultra-slim NanoEdge bezels and an 86% screen-to-body ratio, and says the panel is TÜV Rheinland certified. Certifications of that kind generally relate to display comfort features, so check ASUS's page for what is covered.
Processor and graphics
The Ryzen 7 7730U is an eight-core, low-power AMD mobile chip, and it uses integrated AMD Radeon graphics. That combination is typically comfortable for office suites, many browser tabs, video calls and streaming. Integrated graphics suit light photo editing and casual games, but heavy 3D games and demanding video work need a dedicated graphics card, which this model doesn't list.
Memory and storage
The laptop has 8GB of DDR4 RAM and a 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSD. A terabyte is generous for documents, photos and media. The 8GB of memory is adequate for everyday multitasking, though people who keep dozens of browser tabs open alongside other apps may notice it filling up. The listing doesn't say whether the memory can be upgraded, so check ASUS's documentation if that matters.
Ports and wireless
ASUS lists:
- USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C,
- USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A,
- USB 2.0 Type-A,
- a 3.5mm combo audio jack,
- micro HDMI 1.4.
Wireless is Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax, dual band, 1x1) and Bluetooth 5. Note that the HDMI port is micro-sized, so you'd need a micro-HDMI cable or adapter to connect a monitor or TV. ASUS notes that USB transfer speeds may vary.
Keyboard, sign-in and calls
The backlit chiclet keyboard includes a number pad, which is helpful for spreadsheets and data entry on a 16-inch body. A fingerprint sensor works with Windows Hello for quick sign-in. ASUS also lists AI noise cancelling that uses machine learning to separate speech from background noise on calls.
Build and portability
The laptop weighs 4.1 lb (about 1.9 kg) and is 0.78 inches (about 2 cm) thick, with dimensions of 14.1 x 9.8 inches. ASUS says it meets the US MIL-STD 810H military-grade standard, which refers to a set of environmental test methods rather than a promise that the laptop is indestructible. A 16-inch laptop is portable, but it takes more bag space than a 13- or 14-inch model.
Who it suits
It suits students, home-office workers and families who want a large screen and plenty of storage for everyday computing. It is less suited to heavy gaming, 3D rendering or professional video editing. The listing also mentions a complimentary one-month Adobe Creative Cloud subscription; check ASUS's website for the terms.
What to check before you buy
- Memory: decide whether 8GB is enough for how you work.
- Ports: confirm that a micro-HDMI connection and the mix of USB ports suit your accessories.
- Size: make sure a 16-inch, 4.1 lb laptop fits your bag and routine.
- Battery: the listing gives no battery figure, so check ASUS's specification sheet.
- Software: confirm that the programs you use run on Windows 11 Home.
