The ASUS Vivobook 16 (model M1605YA-EH54) is a thin 16-inch laptop with an AMD Ryzen 5 processor, aimed at students and everyday work. It pairs a taller 16:10 screen with a fingerprint sensor, modern wireless and a military-grade durability claim. Here is what the specs mean.
Processor and graphics
The Ryzen 5 5625U is a 6-core, 12-thread mobile chip at 2.3 GHz, boosting up to 4.3 GHz, with 16 MB of cache and AMD Radeon integrated graphics. Chips of this class generally handle office software, browsing, video calls, streaming and light photo editing smoothly. Integrated graphics are not meant for demanding modern games.
Memory and storage
The laptop has 8 GB of DDR4 RAM and a 512 GB PCIe Gen 3 SSD. 8 GB is enough for typical study and office use, though many browser tabs alongside other apps can fill it. The SSD gives quick start-up and loading, and 512 GB is a comfortable size for documents and everyday files. It runs Windows 11 Home.
The 16:10 display
The 16-inch screen is WUXGA, 1920 x 1200, in 16:10 proportions, giving more vertical space than a 16:9 panel for documents, spreadsheets and web pages. ASUS says it has ultra-slim NanoEdge bezels with an 86% screen-to-body ratio, and that the display is TÜV Rheinland-certified.
Ports and wireless
- 1 x USB 2.0 Type-A
- 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A
- 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C
- HDMI 1.4
- 3.5 mm combo audio jack
- DC-in power
- Wi-Fi 6E (dual band) and Bluetooth 5.3
ASUS notes that actual USB transfer speeds vary with the host device and configuration. Wi-Fi 6E can use the 6 GHz band if your router supports it.
Keyboard, sign-in and calls
The ErgoSense backlit keyboard has a number pad. A fingerprint sensor works with Windows Hello for quick sign-in. ASUS AI Noise-Canceling Technology uses machine learning to separate speech from background noise on calls. The description also lists a built-in webcam shield and a 180° lay-flat hinge, plus a bigger, more responsive touchpad.
Build, size and battery
The laptop meets the US MIL-STD 810H standard, a set of test methods for durability. That standard does not make a laptop indestructible. It measures about 14.1 x 9.8 inches and 0.7 inches thin (36 x 25 x 1.8 cm) and weighs around 4.1 lb (1.9 kg). ASUS describes an 8-hour battery. Real battery life depends on brightness and workload.
Who it suits
It suits students and home or office users who want a larger screen without a heavy machine, for documents, study, streaming and video calls.
What to check before you buy
- Memory: consider whether 8 GB is enough for your multitasking.
- Ports: there is no dedicated Ethernet port, so check your needs.
- Display brightness: the listing gives no brightness figure, so check the specification if you work near windows.
- Bag size: a 16-inch body needs a roomy bag.
- Software offer: the one-month creative software subscription is a limited promotion, so check ASUS's site.
- Charging: check the power adapter and whether USB-C charging is supported.
