The ASUS VivoBook 15 F512JA-AS34 is a slim 15.6-inch laptop built around a 10th-generation Intel Core i3 processor. It is designed for everyday computing such as browsing, documents, video calls and streaming, in a body of about 3.8 lb (1.7 kg) and 0.8 inches thick. This page covers what its specs mean and what to consider.
The display
The screen is 15.6 inches with Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. ASUS calls it a four-way NanoEdge display with an 88% screen-to-body ratio. In practice, that means thin bezels on four sides, so the screen takes up more of the front than on laptops with thick borders. Full HD is a common resolution for this screen size.
Processor, memory and storage
The Intel Core i3-1005G1 is a dual-core, 10th-generation chip that ASUS lists with 4MB cache and speeds up to 3.4 GHz. It suits everyday tasks rather than heavy video editing or demanding games.
The laptop has 8GB of DDR4 memory, which is enough for a browser with several tabs and office apps. Storage is a 128GB PCIe NVMe M.2 solid-state drive. NVMe drives are typically much quicker than older hard drives at starting up and opening programs, but 128GB fills quickly once you add apps and files, so many users rely on cloud or external storage.
Windows 10 in S mode
The VivoBook ships with Windows 10 Home in S mode, which runs only apps from Microsoft's own app catalogue. ASUS says you can switch out of S mode in three steps, without charge, to install software from elsewhere. That is a one-way change, and it is worth knowing about before you commit to apps that are not in that catalogue. ASUS also states compatibility with Google Classroom through Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer 11.
Keyboard and design
The backlit keyboard helps in dim rooms. ASUS's ErgoLift hinge raises the keyboard slightly for a more comfortable typing angle. A fingerprint sensor works with Windows Hello for signing in.
Ports and wireless
The listing gives USB 3.2 Type-C, USB 3.2 Type-A, USB 2.0 and HDMI ports, plus Gigabit Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac). ASUS notes that real USB transfer speeds vary with the device and files in use.
Who it suits
It suits students, home users and anyone who wants a light laptop for everyday work, online lessons and streaming. People who edit video, run large spreadsheets or play modern games typically need a stronger processor and more memory.
What to check before you buy
- Storage: think about whether 128GB will be enough for your files.
- Software: check that the programs you need run in S mode, or plan to switch out of it.
- Ports: confirm that the mix of USB-C, USB-A and HDMI covers your devices; there is no mention of a card reader in the listing.
- Size: 14.1 x 9.1 inches suits a backpack, but check your bag.
- Battery: it uses a lithium-ion battery; check the manual for runtime and charging details.
