The ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER 16GB (model TUF-RTX4070TIS-16G-GAMING) is a desktop graphics card built around NVIDIA's Ada Lovelace architecture. It is aimed at people who play demanding games or do GPU-heavy work and want ray tracing and AI-assisted upscaling. Here is what its listed features mean and what to confirm before fitting one.

What the Ada Lovelace architecture brings

Ada Lovelace is the GPU generation behind the RTX 40 series. ASUS lists three headline items: full ray tracing, fourth-generation Tensor Cores and third-generation RT cores. RT cores handle the calculations for realistic light, reflections and shadows, and ASUS says the third generation delivers up to twice the ray tracing performance of the previous one. Tensor cores run the AI workloads, including upscaling.

DLSS 3 in plain terms

DLSS stands for Deep Learning Super Sampling. In general, the card renders a game at a lower resolution and an AI model reconstructs the image to a higher one, which frees up performance. DLSS 3 also adds frame generation, which creates extra frames between the ones the card renders. ASUS says the fourth-generation Tensor Cores give up to four times the performance with DLSS 3 compared with brute-force rendering. That is a brand figure for supported games, and results depend on the title and settings.

What 16GB of GDDR6X is for

Video memory holds textures, geometry and frame data. 16GB gives headroom for high-resolution textures and high-resolution displays, and it also helps with large scenes in creative applications. GDDR6X is a fast memory type used on higher-end NVIDIA cards, and it typically runs warmer than plain GDDR6, which is one reason cooling matters on this class of card.

Cooling: axial-tech fans and ball bearings

ASUS says its Axial-tech fan design gives 21% more airflow, and that the dual ball-bearing fans last up to twice as long as traditional designs. A larger, heavier cooler generally means the fans can spin more slowly for the same temperatures, which tends to keep noise down. The card weighs 4.4 lb (about 2 kg) and measures roughly 12 inches (about 30 cm) long.

Ports and the PCIe 4.0 interface

The card connects to the motherboard over PCIe 4.0. It also works in a PCIe 5.0 slot, since slots are generally backward compatible, and in a 3.0 slot with the possible loss of some bandwidth. For displays there are two HDMI 2.1a ports and three DisplayPort 1.4a ports, which covers several monitors, or a high-refresh display plus a television.

Who it suits

It suits desktop builders and upgraders who play at high resolutions or high refresh rates, use ray tracing, or run GPU-accelerated creative software. It is a full-size card, so it is for tower cases rather than compact systems.

What to check before you buy

  • Case clearance: compare the card's length, thickness and weight with your case, and check whether the case has room for a support bracket if you want one.
  • Power supply: check ASUS's recommended power supply wattage and the power connectors the card needs, and whether your supply has them.
  • Motherboard slot: you need a free full-length PCIe x16 slot and enough space around it for airflow.
  • Monitor inputs: make sure your displays match the HDMI and DisplayPort connections.
  • Drivers and software: install current drivers from the GPU maker, and follow the manual during installation.

The short version

  • A desktop graphics card with 16GB GDDR6X and NVIDIA's Ada Lovelace architecture.
  • Supports DLSS 3 and ray tracing, with fourth-generation Tensor Cores and third-generation RT cores.
  • Axial-tech fans and dual ball bearings for cooling.
  • PCIe 4.0 interface; two HDMI 2.1a and three DisplayPort 1.4a outputs.
  • About 12 inches long and 4.4 lb, so check case and power supply compatibility first.
