The ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4090 OG OC Edition is a high-end graphics card built around NVIDIA's RTX 4090 GPU, with 24GB of GDDR6X memory and a factory overclock. ASUS says it keeps the size and look of its RTX 30 series TUF cards while using a smaller footprint than many 4090 designs. This page covers what the main specs mean for a PC build.
The GPU and its architecture
The card uses NVIDIA's Ada Lovelace architecture. ASUS lists 4th-generation Tensor Cores, which accelerate AI workloads, and 3rd-generation RT Cores for ray tracing. Ray tracing simulates how light behaves in a scene, giving more realistic reflections and shadows at the expense of extra computing work. ASUS says the RT Cores provide up to twice the ray-tracing performance of the previous generation.
DLSS 3 in plain terms
DLSS is NVIDIA's upscaling and frame-generation technology. It renders a game at a lower internal resolution and uses AI to reconstruct the image. DLSS 3 adds frame generation, which creates extra frames between the ones the GPU renders. ASUS says it offers up to 4x performance compared with brute-force rendering. It only works in games that support it, so the benefit depends on what you play.
Clock speeds and OC mode
In OC mode, the listing gives a boost clock of up to 2595 MHz and a Game Clock of up to 2565 MHz. Boost clocks show the highest speeds the GPU may reach; real speeds vary with temperature and power. Cards typically ship in a default mode and an OC mode, switched using ASUS software.
Cooling and build quality
The card uses an Axial-tech fan design with a reversed central fan direction, which ASUS says reduces turbulence. It also lists dual ball fan bearings and military-grade capacitors, and says the combination is meant to help the card last. The card measures about 12.8 x 5.5 x 2.4 inches (32.5 x 14 x 6 cm) and weighs 3.7 lb (about 1.7 kg).
Connections
The listing names HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4a outputs. HDMI 2.1 is the version needed for 4K at high refresh rates on TVs and monitors that support it. The card uses a PCIe 4.0 interface, which also works in slots of other generations in general, with the speed set by the lower of the two.
Who it suits
It suits enthusiasts building a high-end gaming PC, and people doing GPU-heavy work such as 3D rendering or video editing, who value the large 24GB memory pool.
What to check before you buy
- Case clearance: compare the card's length and thickness with your case.
- Power supply: cards of this class draw a lot of power. Check the wattage and connectors NVIDIA and ASUS recommend, and seat the power connector fully, following the manual.
- Motherboard slot: confirm a free PCIe x16 slot.
- Monitor: a 4090 shows most of its potential on a high-resolution or high-refresh display.
- Software support: check that your games or apps use DLSS 3.
- Airflow: good case ventilation matters for sustained loads.
