The ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super OC Edition is a high-end graphics card for desktop PCs. It pairs NVIDIA's RTX 4080 Super graphics chip with 16GB of GDDR6X memory and a large cooler, and ASUS factory-overclocks it slightly. It is aimed at gaming at high resolutions and settings, and at creative work that uses the graphics card.

Ada Lovelace, ray tracing and DLSS 3

The card uses NVIDIA's Ada Lovelace architecture. Two features are central. Third-generation RT cores handle ray tracing, a lighting technique that simulates light bouncing around a scene, and NVIDIA says they deliver up to twice the ray tracing performance of the previous generation. Fourth-generation Tensor cores run AI tasks, including DLSS 3.

DLSS 3 renders a game at a lower internal resolution, then uses AI to upscale it and generate extra frames. NVIDIA says this can deliver up to four times the performance of brute-force rendering. It only works in games that support it, and results vary.

Clock speeds and memory

ASUS lists 2640 MHz in OC mode and 2610 MHz in the default mode. The difference is small, so the practical gain from OC mode is modest. Memory is 16GB of GDDR6X, which is enough for most games at 4K today and for many editing and 3D tasks. The card connects over PCIe 4.0 and offers HDMI 2.1a and DisplayPort 1.4a outputs.

The TUF cooling and build

ASUS describes several durability features:

  • Axial-tech fans scaled up for 23% more airflow.
  • Dual ball fan bearings, which ASUS says last up to twice as long as conventional designs.
  • Military-grade capacitors rated for 20,000 hours at 105°C.
  • A metal exoskeleton for rigidity and heat dissipation.
  • Auto-Extreme automated manufacturing.

These are the brand's claims. GPU Tweak III software lets you adjust performance, thermal behaviour and monitoring.

Size matters

The listing gives dimensions of 16.8 x 10.5 x 3.9 inches (about 43 x 27 x 10 cm) including packaging and a weight of 6.6 lb (about 3 kg). The card itself is large and heavy, so case clearance, motherboard slot spacing and support in the case all deserve attention before ordering.

Who it suits

It suits players who want smooth frame rates at 1440p or 4K with ray tracing, creators who use GPU-accelerated rendering or video effects, and builders who want a well-cooled card. It is more than most 1080p setups need.

What to check before you buy

  • Case clearance: measure the length, height and thickness your case allows.
  • Power supply: check ASUS's and NVIDIA's recommended power supply wattage and connector requirements.
  • Slot and bracing: confirm the PCIe slot and consider a support bracket for the weight.
  • Monitor ports: match HDMI 2.1a and DisplayPort 1.4a to your display.
  • Processor balance: a much older processor can limit the card.
  • Noise and temperatures: check the case airflow.

The short version

  • A 16GB GDDR6X RTX 4080 Super graphics card with a factory OC mode of 2640 MHz.
  • Ada Lovelace architecture with DLSS 3 and ray tracing support.
  • Large axial-tech cooler with ball bearings and a metal exoskeleton.
  • PCIe 4.0, HDMI 2.1a and DisplayPort 1.4a.
  • Big and heavy at about 3 kg, so check your case and power supply.
