The ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DV-ES74 is a 15.6-inch Windows gaming laptop built around an AMD Ryzen 7 processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics chip. It is aimed at people who want a portable machine for games and everyday multitasking, rather than a desktop tower.

Processor and memory

The Ryzen 7 3750H is a quad-core processor that runs at speeds up to 4.0GHz, according to ASUS. Four cores with simultaneous multithreading are typically enough for games, browsing and general work running side by side. The laptop has 16GB of DDR4 memory, which is a comfortable amount for current games and several open applications.

Graphics

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 has 8GB of GDDR6 memory according to the listing, with a base clock of 1110MHz, a boost clock of 1335MHz and a TDP of 80W. TDP is the power the graphics chip is designed to draw, and a laptop version is usually limited compared with a desktop card of the same name. The RTX family adds hardware for ray tracing, a lighting technique that some games support.

Display

The screen is 15.6 inches, Full HD (1920 x 1080), and an IPS-type panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. IPS-type panels generally offer wide viewing angles, and a 120Hz rate redraws the picture twice as often as a standard 60Hz laptop screen, which looks smoother in fast games when the graphics chip can keep up. ASUS says the bezels are narrow.

Storage, wireless and keyboard

Storage is a 512GB NVMe SSD, which typically loads games and the operating system far faster than a hard drive. Wireless is Gigabit Wave 2 Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), which ASUS says reaches data rates up to 1.7Gbps. That is a theoretical figure that depends on the router.

The backlit keyboard is rated for 20 million keystrokes. The laptop ships with Windows 10 Home.

Cooling

ASUS describes a patented Anti-Dust Cooling (ADC) system, which it says gives the laptop an extended lifespan. Dust building up in the fans and heat pipes is a common cause of a laptop running hotter over time. Follow the manual for any cleaning.

Size and weight

The laptop measures about 14.2 x 10.3 x 1.0 inches (36 x 26 x 2.5 cm) and weighs 3.5 lb (about 1.6 kg), which is light for a gaming laptop.

Who it suits

It suits students and gamers who want one computer for play, schoolwork and media, and who would like to carry it between places.

What to check before you buy

  • Operating system: it ships with Windows 10, so check the support timeline and upgrade options on Microsoft's site.
  • Games you play: compare the recommended specs of your games with this hardware.
  • Battery life: gaming drains a battery quickly, so expect to plug in.
  • Upgrades: check the manual on whether memory and storage can be changed.
  • Ports: confirm the ports you need, such as HDMI and USB, are on the laptop.
  • Condition: confirm whether the unit is new, as the listing describes.
