The ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DT (model FX505DT-ES73) is a 15.6-inch Windows gaming laptop built around an AMD Ryzen 7 processor and a GeForce GTX 1650 graphics chip. It aims at people who want smooth gameplay on a Full HD screen without moving up to a larger or heavier machine. Here is what its main specifications mean in practice.
The processor and graphics
ASUS pairs a quad-core AMD Ryzen 7 3750H with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 graphics that have 4GB of dedicated video memory. The CPU handles game logic, background programs and everyday multitasking. The GPU does the drawing, so it has the biggest say in the frame rates and detail settings you can use.
The GTX 1650 is an entry-level gaming GPU from NVIDIA's 16-series. It does not have the ray tracing hardware found on RTX cards. In general, it suits esports titles and older or less demanding games at Full HD, with settings turned down in newer, heavier ones. ASUS also lists "ROG Boost", which lets the graphics chip run at a higher clock speed when power and cooling allow.
A 144Hz screen
The 15.6-inch display is Full HD (1920 x 1080) and described as IPS-type with a narrow bezel. The refresh rate of up to 144Hz means the picture updates 144 times a second, against 60 on a typical office laptop. Motion usually looks smoother and cursor or camera movement feels more responsive, but only if the game actually produces that many frames. Many games on this class of hardware will run below 144 frames per second, so the screen gives you headroom rather than a guarantee.
Memory, storage and wireless
The laptop has 8GB of DDR4-2666 memory and a 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD. NVMe storage is typically much faster than older SATA drives, which shortens boot and game loading times. Eight gigabytes is enough to start with, though modern games and a busy browser can use most of it, so check the manual or ASUS support pages on whether the memory can be expanded.
Wi-Fi is Gigabit Wave 2 Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), which ASUS says can reach data rates up to 1.7Gbps. Real speeds depend on your router and connection. It ships with Windows 10 Home.
Cooling and keyboard
ASUS highlights its patented Anti-Dust Cooling (ADC) system, designed to keep dust from building up inside the cooling path and extending the machine's useful life. Gaming laptops are loud and warm under load by nature, and cooling design affects how long the processor and graphics chip can sustain their top speeds.
The backlit keyboard is rated for 20 million keystrokes, which ASUS cites as a durability figure.
Size and weight
The laptop measures about 14.2 x 10.3 x 1.0 inches (36 x 26 x 2.5 cm) and weighs 4.9 lb (about 2.2 kg). That is portable enough for a backpack, but it is a laptop to carry between desks, not one to use all day away from a charger.
Who it suits
It suits students and players who want one computer for classes and games, and people stepping up from a basic laptop who play popular titles at Full HD. It is less suited to anyone who wants to play the newest games at high settings, or to edit video professionally.
What to check before you buy
- Games you play: compare each game's minimum and recommended specifications with a 4GB GTX 1650 and 8GB of memory.
- Upgrades: confirm in the manual whether RAM and the SSD can be changed, and what that does to the warranty.
- Battery: the listing gives no battery runtime, so look at the full specification for the battery capacity.
- Weight and noise: a 4.9 lb gaming laptop with fans is not silent under load.
- What's in the box: check for the charger and the included documentation.
- Operating system: it comes with Windows 10 Home; check the current support status and upgrade options.
