The ASUS TUF Gaming F17 (FX706LI-RS53) is a 17.3-inch gaming laptop built around an Intel Core i5-10300H processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti graphics. It comes with 8GB of memory, a 512GB solid-state drive and Windows 10 Home. It is a large-screen laptop for playing games and handling everyday work at a desk.

Processor and graphics

The Core i5-10300H is a quad-core chip with 8MB of cache and a boost speed of up to 4.5 GHz. Quad-core processors typically handle games and multitasking well, though newer chips offer more cores.

Graphics come from a GeForce GTX 1650 Ti with 4GB of GDDR6 memory. ASUS lists it at up to 1585 MHz with an 80W total graphics power (TGP) figure. TGP is the amount of power the laptop gives the graphics chip, and higher figures usually allow higher sustained speeds. A GTX 1650 Ti class chip is generally suited to 1080p gaming at moderate settings in many titles, but it lacks the ray tracing hardware of RTX cards.

Display

The 17.3-inch screen is Full HD (1920 x 1080) and uses an IPS-type panel. IPS panels typically offer wider viewing angles and steadier colour than other common panel types. The extra size is comfortable for games, documents and side-by-side windows, though it also makes the laptop larger. ASUS describes the design as having narrow bezels.

Memory and storage

There is 8GB of DDR4 memory running at 2933 MHz. That is a reasonable amount for general use, and heavier multitasking or newer games may benefit from more, so check whether the memory can be expanded if that matters to you. Storage is a 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD, which typically gives quick start-up and game load times compared with a hard drive.

Build, cooling and keyboard

The TUF line is known for durability. ASUS says the F17 follows MIL-STD-810H military standard construction, a set of tests covering things like drops, vibration and temperature. It is not a guarantee against damage, but it points to a sturdier build. ASUS also mentions its Anti-Dust Cooling system, aimed at keeping dust from building up inside the fans over time.

The backlit RGB gaming keyboard is rated for 20 million keystrokes. The laptop supports Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) for faster wireless connections, if you have a compatible router.

Operating system

It ships with Windows 10 Home, and ASUS says it is eligible for an upgrade to Windows 11 when available. Check ASUS's website for upgrade details.

Who it suits

It suits someone who wants a large-screen gaming laptop for 1080p play, schoolwork or general use and who likes a rugged design. At 5.7 lb (about 2.6 kg) and 15.7 inches wide, it is a laptop that stays mostly on a desk.

What to check before you buy

  • Size and weight: Confirm it fits your bag and desk.
  • Games you play: Compare the games' recommended graphics requirements with a GTX 1650 Ti.
  • Memory and storage: Check whether 8GB and 512GB are enough, and if upgrades are possible.
  • Battery and charger: Gaming laptops usually run best plugged in and often need a larger charger.
  • Operating system: Check the Windows 11 upgrade requirements.
