The ASUS TUF Gaming A16 (2024), model FA607PI-AS94, is a 16-inch Windows 11 laptop built for gaming. It pairs a high-end AMD processor with an NVIDIA RTX 4070 laptop graphics chip and a fast, tall screen. This page explains what those parts do and what to think about before choosing a laptop of this type.

The processor and graphics

ASUS fits the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HX, a processor from AMD's high-performance mobile range. Chips in this "HX" class typically have many cores and run at higher power than thin-and-light laptop processors, which helps with demanding games, video editing and other heavy multitasking.

The graphics come from an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU. The graphics chip does most of the work in games, so it largely decides what resolution and detail settings are realistic. ASUS also lists support for NVIDIA Advanced Optimus, which lets the laptop switch between the graphics chip and the processor's own graphics depending on the task. Used well, that can save power when you're not gaming.

A 16:10 screen with a high refresh rate

The display is 16 inches with QHD+ (2.5K) resolution and a 165Hz refresh rate. Refresh rate is how many times per second the picture updates. At 165Hz, motion is typically smoother than on a standard 60Hz panel, which many players notice in fast games. The listing also mentions NVIDIA G-SYNC, which matches the screen's updates to the frame rate of the game to reduce tearing.

The 16:10 shape is a little taller than the usual 16:9, so you see more of a web page or document at once. ASUS says slim bezels give a 90% screen-to-body ratio.

Memory and storage

The configuration listed here has 16GB of DDR5 memory and a 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD. 16GB is a common amount for gaming. A PCIe Gen4 SSD loads games and files much faster than a hard drive. Check the manual to see whether memory and storage can be upgraded.

Cooling and build

Gaming laptops produce a lot of heat, so cooling matters. ASUS lists Arc Flow Fans, four exhaust vents, five dedicated heat pipes and an anti-dust filter, and says this keeps cooling effective without extra noise. As a rule, real-world fan noise depends on the game and the performance mode you choose.

The A16 is also described as meeting the MIL-STD-810H military testing standard. That is a set of environmental test methods, such as shock, vibration and temperature. It indicates that the design was tested against those methods, but it isn't a promise that the laptop is indestructible.

Audio, connectivity and size

ASUS lists Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res audio support, plus Wi-Fi 6. The laptop measures about 14.0 x 9.9 x 0.9 inches (about 35.6 x 25.1 x 2.3 cm) and weighs 5.0 lb (about 2.3 kg), so it's portable but better suited to being carried between a desk and a bag than used all day on the move.

Who it suits

It suits people who want a single machine for gaming, creative work and everyday computing, and who value a large, smooth display. It's less suited to anyone who needs very light weight or the longest possible battery life, which is typically a trade-off with powerful hardware.

What to check before you buy

  • Size and weight: confirm that 5 lb and a 16-inch body fit your bag and desk.
  • Games and software: check the recommended specs for the titles you play.
  • Ports: check the listed ports against your monitor, headset and other accessories.
  • Power: gaming laptops use a large charger, so check that you're happy to carry it.
  • Upgrades and upkeep: check the manual for memory, storage and dust-filter cleaning.
  • What's in the box: confirm the exact configuration and model number, FA607PI-AS94.
