The ASUS TUF Gaming A15, model TUF506IU-ES74, is a 15.6-inch gaming laptop with an eight-core AMD Ryzen 7 4800H processor and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti graphics chip. It is an earlier-generation machine that ASUS aims at playing popular games and handling multitasking.

Processor and graphics

The Ryzen 7 4800H is an eight-core, 45W mobile processor with 8MB of cache and a boost speed of up to 4.2GHz, according to ASUS. Eight cores help with running many programs together, and with tasks such as video editing that spread across cores.

The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti has 6GB of GDDR6 memory and uses "ROG Boost", ASUS's name for a higher graphics clock speed. This is a graphics chip without the ray-tracing hardware of NVIDIA's RTX line, so it suits regular rasterised gaming at 1080p.

Memory, storage and upgrades

You get 16GB of DDR4-3200 memory and a 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD, with Windows 10 Home preinstalled. ASUS describes an "Easy Upgrade Design", which lets you add or replace memory and storage. It is worth checking the manual for how to open the case and what the maximum supported capacity is.

Display

The 15.6-inch screen is Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS-type with a 144Hz refresh rate. For games that run at high frame rates, 144Hz typically looks smoother than a 60Hz laptop screen. The bezels around the screen are narrow.

Cooling and durability

ASUS highlights self-cleaning dual fans with anti-dust technology, which it says extends the system's longevity. The laptop is also described as built to the MIL-STD-810H military standard, a US test standard covering conditions such as vibration and temperature. It is not the same as being damage-proof.

Battery, keyboard and connectivity

The 90WHr battery is rated by ASUS at up to 8.7 hours of web browsing and up to 12.3 hours of video playback. Actual figures depend heavily on brightness, settings and workload, and gaming will drain it far faster.

The RGB backlit keyboard is rated for 20 million keystrokes. Wireless is Gigabit Wave 2 Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), which ASUS says can reach data rates of up to 1.7Gbps. This is a theoretical maximum, and real-world speeds depend on your router and environment.

What to check before you buy

  • Operating system: this configuration ships with Windows 10 Home, so confirm that works for your needs and support timeline.
  • Size and weight: about 14.5 x 10.1 x 1.0 inches and 5.1 lb.
  • Whether Wi-Fi 5 is enough for your network, or whether you want Wi-Fi 6.
  • How much storage you need; 512GB fills up quickly with large games.
  • Ports: the listing does not list them in detail, so check the full specifications for what you need.
