The ASUS TUF Gaming A15 (2023), model FA507NU-DS74, is a 15.6-inch gaming laptop that pairs an AMD Ryzen 7 processor with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 graphics chip. It is built for people who want one machine for modern games, study and everyday work, and who are willing to carry something heavier than an ultrabook. Here is what its specs mean.

Processor and graphics

The CPU is an AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS, an eight-core mobile processor from the Ryzen 7000 generation. The graphics chip is the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU, which ASUS lists at a 140W maximum TGP. TGP (total graphics power) is the power allowance for the graphics chip, and in general a higher figure lets the GPU run faster before it hits its limit. Laptop graphics chips with the same name can be set to different power levels, so the figure is worth checking.

The RTX 40 series supports ray tracing and DLSS, NVIDIA's upscaling and frame-generation technology, in games that implement them. An RTX 4050 is typically aimed at 1080p gaming, which matches this laptop's screen.

Memory and storage

The laptop has 16GB of DDR5-4800 memory, which is enough for gaming alongside a browser and chat apps and for most everyday multitasking. Storage is a 1TB PCIe 4.0 (x4) SSD. PCIe 4.0 drives are typically much faster than SATA drives or older PCIe 3.0 ones, which shortens game and file loading times. With modern games often taking tens of gigabytes each, 1TB is a comfortable amount of room for a small library.

The 144Hz display

The screen is 15.6 inches, Full HD (1920 x 1080), with a 144Hz refresh rate and 100% sRGB colour coverage. A 144Hz refresh rate makes motion look smoother than the common 60Hz, provided the games run at high frame rates. Full sRGB coverage means the panel can show the standard colour range used for most web content and games, which also helps with casual photo work. ASUS adds that Adaptive Sync reduces lag, stuttering and screen tearing.

Cooling and graphics switching

ASUS fits a pair of 84-blade Arc Flow Fans, which it says improve cooling without extra noise. Gaming laptops generate a lot of heat under load, so cooling affects how long performance can be sustained. Actual noise depends on the game and the fan profile you choose.

The laptop also has a MUX switch with Advanced Optimus. In general, this lets the laptop use the integrated graphics for light tasks to save battery, and the dedicated GPU for games. ASUS says the switching is automatic based on the task.

Build and software

The listing says the laptop has passed MIL-STD-810H tests. This is a US military test standard covering conditions such as vibration and temperature, and it does not mean the laptop is indestructible. It runs Windows 11, is Wi-Fi 6E capable, and comes in Mecha Gray. ASUS also includes a 90-day Xbox Game Pass offer.

At 8.8 lb and about 13.9 x 9.9 inches, it is a substantial laptop, and the power adapter adds more weight.

Who it suits

It suits students and players who want a single computer for games and schoolwork, and people who prefer a gaming laptop that they can move between rooms rather than a desktop tower. Those who travel daily or need long battery life may find a lighter laptop more practical.

What to check before you buy

  • Weight and bag: confirm it fits your bag and that you are comfortable carrying the laptop and charger.
  • Games you play: look up the recommended graphics settings for your favourite titles at 1080p.
  • Battery life: gaming laptops usually run for much less time unplugged when gaming, so plan to plug in.
  • Ports: check the manual for the full port list and that it covers your accessories.
  • Upgrades: check the manual on whether memory and storage can be replaced later.
