The ASUS ROG Strix Scope II X is a full-size wired USB mechanical gaming keyboard. It pairs hot-swappable linear switches with PBT keycaps, RGB lighting and a set of media and streaming controls. Here is what those features mean for typing and gaming.
Hot-swappable ROG NX Snow V2 switches
The keyboard uses ROG NX Snow V2 linear switches. Linear switches press straight down with no tactile bump or click, which many players like for fast, repeated key presses. ASUS says the V2 version delivers softer acoustics and a more refined typing feel.
"Hot-swappable" means the switches plug into sockets rather than being soldered to the board. In general, you can pull a switch out and fit another without soldering, to change the feel or replace one. ASUS says this design also supports more keycap profiles. Check the manual for compatible switch types and the right way to remove them.
Smoother stabilizers and quieter sound
The longer keys, such as the space bar and Enter, use stabilizers to keep them level. ASUS pre-lubes these to reduce friction, for smoother keystrokes and better stability. It also fits sound-dampening foam inside the case, which absorbs pinging and echo.
PBT doubleshot keycaps
The description lists PBT doubleshot keycaps. PBT is a hard plastic that typically resists the shine that wears into keys over time. Doubleshot means the legend is moulded in a second layer rather than printed, so the lettering generally doesn't rub off.
Controls and hotkeys
- Xbox Game Bar hotkeys: F1 to F5 open the Game Bar and recording-related functions without complicated key combinations.
- Multi-function button and multiwheel: control media playback, volume and keyboard lighting.
- ROG space bar: a UV-coated space bar with ROG markings and three RGB LEDs underneath.
The description also mentions a detachable wrist rest.
Layout, connection and compatibility
This is a 100% full-size layout, so it includes the number pad. It connects by wired USB and ASUS lists PC and Mac support. It measures about 17.2 x 5.1 x 1.5 inches (44 x 13 x 4 cm) and weighs 2.1 lb (about 0.95 kg). Some features, such as the Xbox Game Bar hotkeys, are designed for Windows.
Who it suits
PC gamers who want a full-size board with linear switches, and anyone who likes to customize their keyboard by changing switches or keycaps. The media wheel and hotkeys also suit people who stream or record.
What to check before you buy
- Switch feel: linear switches have no tactile bump. If you prefer a click or bump, consider that before buying.
- Layout: confirm that a full-size layout fits your desk and mouse space.
- Operating system: the Game Bar hotkeys are aimed at Windows.
- Customization: check which switches and keycaps are compatible if you plan to swap them.
- Software: see the manual for lighting and key settings.
