The ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 (model G835LX-XS97) is an 18-inch gaming laptop built around a top-end mobile graphics chip and a large Mini LED display. It targets people who want desktop-class gaming and creative performance in a machine that can still be moved from desk to desk. Here is what its main specifications mean.

The processor and graphics

ASUS pairs an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX processor with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU running at 175W TGP. TGP (total graphics power) is the power limit the graphics chip is allowed, and in general a higher figure lets the same chip sustain higher clock speeds. Laptop versions of a graphics chip are typically not identical to desktop cards of the same name, so it helps to compare by power limit and by the games or software you use.

The laptop also has a MUX switch, which ASUS says boosts gaming performance by 5-10% by sending frames straight from the dedicated GPU to the screen. With Advanced Optimus, the system switches between integrated and dedicated graphics depending on the task, without a restart, which typically helps battery life away from games.

Memory and storage

The configuration has 32GB of DDR5-5600 memory and a 2TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD, with throughput of up to 7,000MB/s according to ASUS. Thirty-two gigabytes is generous for current games, video editing and running several heavy programs at once. Modern game installs are large, so 2TB gives room for a decent library before you need extra storage.

An 18-inch Mini LED display

The ROG Nebula HDR screen is 18 inches in a 16:10 shape, with 2.5K resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate. ASUS lists Mini LED backlighting with more than 2,000 dimming zones, 100% DCI-P3 colour coverage and a dual ACR anti-reflective coating. In general, more dimming zones let a screen darken parts of the picture independently, which improves contrast in HDR content. A high refresh rate makes fast motion look smoother, provided the graphics chip can produce enough frames per second.

Cooling and noise

ASUS describes an end-to-end vapor chamber, a tri-fan design and Conductonaut liquid metal on the chipset. Liquid metal is a thermal compound that conducts heat better than the usual paste. Good cooling matters because powerful laptops reduce speed when they get too hot. Gaming laptops of this class are still typically audible under heavy load.

Lighting and styling

The lid carries AniMe Vision, which can show text, animations or custom images. A full-surround RGB light bar gives a glow around the base, and Stealth Mode switches all lighting off for a plainer look.

Upgrades and extras

The listing describes tool-free access: a sliding latch on the bottom lets you reach the RAM, SSD and fans, and a removable frame protects the other hardware. The laptop ships with Windows 11 Pro, Wi-Fi 7 and a three-month PC Game Pass trial.

Size and weight

It measures about 15.7 x 11.7 inches and 0.9 inches thick (roughly 40 x 30 x 2.3 cm) and weighs 6.3 lb (about 2.9 kg). That is portable for what it is, but you'll want a roomy bag and its power adapter, which is typically large.

Who it suits

It suits gamers who want a large, fast screen and the highest-tier laptop graphics, and creators who render 3D or video and want a bright HDR display. People who mainly browse or write documents would typically be served by a much lighter machine.

What to check before you buy

  • Desk and bag space: an 18-inch laptop at 6.3 lb is bigger than most.
  • Power adapter: check its size and weight, and your travel plans.
  • Screen: 2.5K resolution on 18 inches is sharp, but confirm it suits the games and apps you use.
  • Storage: confirm 2TB is enough or that you're comfortable adding drives.
  • Warranty and support: check the terms in your region.
  • Noise: gaming loads spin up the fans; decide whether headphones are part of your plan.

The short version

  • 18-inch ROG Nebula HDR Mini LED display, 240Hz, 2.5K, 100% DCI-P3.
  • Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX with an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU at 175W.
  • 32GB DDR5-5600 and a 2TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD.
  • Vapor chamber, tri-fan cooling and liquid metal; tool-free upgrade access.
  • 6.3 lb, Wi-Fi 7, Windows 11 Pro.
