The ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 18 (2025, model G835LW-XS97) is an 18-inch gaming laptop with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU. It is a large, high-power machine for gamers and creators who want a big screen and a lot of performance and are happy to carry the weight: 6.3 lb (about 2.9 kg).
Processor, memory and storage
The Core Ultra 9 275HX is a high-end laptop processor for gaming and heavy multitasking. It is paired with 32GB of DDR5-5600 memory, which is plentiful for current games and most creative software, and a 2TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD that ASUS says reaches up to 7,000MB/s. Fast storage mainly shortens load times and file transfers. The laptop runs Windows 11 Pro and supports Wi-Fi 7, which needs a compatible router to take advantage of.
The Nebula HDR display
The 18-inch ROG Nebula HDR screen is 16:10 at 2.5K resolution with a 240Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time. ASUS lists Mini LED technology with more than 2,000 dimming zones, 100% DCI-P3 colour and dual ACR (anti-reflective) layers.
- Mini LED with dimming zones: the backlight is split into many small zones that can brighten or dim independently, which typically improves contrast and HDR highlights compared with a standard backlight.
- 240Hz: the image updates 240 times a second, which suits fast games when the GPU can keep up.
- DCI-P3: a wide colour range used in cinema and photo work.
Cooling
ASUS calls its system ROG Intelligent Cooling. It combines an end-to-end vapor chamber, a sandwiched heatsink, tri-fan technology and Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal on the chipset. Laptops at this performance level generate a lot of heat, and better heat transfer typically allows higher sustained speeds. Even so, expect fan noise under heavy load.
MUX Switch and Advanced Optimus
A MUX switch lets the GPU send frames straight to the display, which ASUS says raises gaming performance by 5-10%. Advanced Optimus switches between the integrated and dedicated graphics automatically, without a restart, which ASUS says improves battery life during lighter tasks.
Design and upgrades
The lid carries AniMe Vision, a customizable display that can show text, animations or your own creations. A full-surround RGB light bar gives a 360° glow, and Stealth Mode turns off all lighting for a plainer look. ASUS also describes tool-free access: a latch on the bottom lets you reach RAM, SSD and fans without a screwdriver, with a removable frame protecting the other hardware. The laptop also includes a 3-month PC Game Pass.
Who it suits
It suits people who want a desktop-style experience in a laptop: high-refresh gaming, video editing, 3D work or streaming, mostly at a desk. At 15.7 inches wide, it is a poor fit for those who need something light.
What to check before you buy
- Size and weight: it measures about 15.7 x 11.7 inches and weighs 6.3 lb, plus a large charger; confirm it fits your bag and desk.
- Fan noise: headphones are typically useful at full load.
- Wi-Fi 7: you need a compatible router for those speeds.
- Upgrades: check the manual for supported memory and storage configurations before changing parts.
- Game Pass: confirm the terms and region of the 3-month subscription offer.
- Lighting: AniMe Vision and the light bar can be turned off if you prefer.
