The ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 (2021), model G533QS-DS98, is a 15.6-inch gaming laptop built around an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 graphics chip. It is aimed at fast-paced competitive games, with a high-refresh display and an optical-mechanical keyboard. Here is what the specs mean.
Processor and memory
The Ryzen 9 5900HX is a Ryzen 5000-series mobile processor with 16MB of cache and a boost speed of up to 4.6 GHz. Chips in this class typically have eight cores, which helps with games, streaming and video editing at the same time. The laptop has 32GB of DDR4 memory running at 3200MHz, which is more than most games need and leaves headroom for creative software and many browser tabs.
Graphics
ASUS lists the GeForce RTX 3080 with 16GB of GDDR6 memory, with ROG Boost up to 1645MHz at 115W, or 130W with Dynamic Boost 2.0. Laptop graphics chips run at lower power than desktop cards of the same name, so the wattage figure matters. Higher power allows higher clocks, as long as the cooling keeps up. The RTX 30 series supports ray tracing and DLSS in compatible games.
A 300Hz display
The 15.6-inch IPS-type screen is Full HD (1920 x 1080) with a 300Hz refresh rate and a 3ms response time. A higher refresh rate means more updates a second, which looks smoother in fast games. To benefit, the game needs to reach high frame rates, which is mostly relevant in esports titles. The listing also mentions a WQHD 165Hz option for the range, but this model is the 300Hz one.
Keyboard and cooling
The keyboard is an optical-mechanical design with per-key RGB lighting. Optical switches register a press with light rather than a metal contact, which ASUS says makes the keys responsive.
For cooling, ASUS uses its ROG Intelligent Cooling thermal system with Thermal Grizzly liquid metal thermal compound on the processor. Liquid metal conducts heat better than standard paste, and it can help keep temperatures down under load.
Storage, size and weight
The 1TB PCIe SSD is fast enough for quick boots and load times and holds a modest library of large games. The laptop measures 13.9 x 10.2 x 1.1 inches (about 35 x 26 x 2.8 cm) and weighs 5.1 lb (about 2.3 kg), light for a laptop with this much hardware, though the power adapter adds more.
The listing names Windows 10 Home and says eligible devices qualify for a free Windows 11 upgrade, subject to ASUS's own terms.
Who it suits
It suits gamers who want smooth, fast gameplay in competitive titles, and creators who want one machine for editing and play. It is a portable system rather than a thin-and-light one.
What to check before you buy
- Battery life: gaming laptops typically drain quickly under load, so plan to play plugged in.
- Power adapter: check its size and weight if you travel.
- Fan noise: high-performance cooling is typically audible under load.
- Software version: confirm the Windows version and any upgrade steps on ASUS's website.
- Ports: check that the connections match your headset, monitor and other devices.
- Age: it is a 2021 model, so compare it with the hardware you actually need.
