The ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 (model G532LWS-DS76) is a 15.6-inch gaming laptop pairing a 10th-generation Intel Core i7 processor with a GeForce RTX 2070 Super graphics chip. ASUS pitches it at fast-paced competitive games, with a 240Hz screen and a cooling system designed to hold performance during long sessions.
The processor and graphics
The Intel Core i7-10875H is an eight-core mobile processor from Intel's 10th generation, built for demanding tasks such as gaming, streaming and video work. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER has 8GB of GDDR6 memory. ASUS lists a base clock of 1140 MHz, a boost clock of 1380 MHz with ROG Boost, and a 115W TDP. TDP gives a sense of the power the graphics chip may draw, which is why gaming laptops are larger and need bigger chargers than thin-and-light models. RTX graphics add support for ray tracing and DLSS in compatible games.
What a 240Hz screen means
The 15.6-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS-type display refreshes 240 times a second, with a 3 ms response time. A higher refresh rate shows motion more smoothly, which can help in fast shooters and other competitive titles, but only if the laptop can produce frames that fast, which depends on the game and settings. IPS panels typically offer wider viewing angles and better colour than basic panels.
Memory and storage
The laptop has 16GB of DDR4-3200 memory and a 1TB PCIe SSD, with Windows 10 Home installed. The PCIe SSD loads games and the system quickly. The 16GB is a sensible amount for current games alongside background programs.
Cooling and the liquid metal compound
ASUS's ROG Intelligent Cooling thermal system uses Thermal Grizzly Liquid Metal compound on the processor in place of conventional thermal paste. Liquid metal conducts heat better, which ASUS says helps the processor sustain peak performance. Even so, gaming laptops produce noticeable fan noise and warmth under heavy load, which is normal.
Keyboard and design
The listing mentions per-key RGB lighting, which lets you set a colour for each key. The laptop measures about 14.2 x 10.8 x 1.0 inches and weighs 5.7 lb (about 2.6 kg), plus the power adapter, so it is portable in the sense of moving between rooms or a backpack, rather than light for daily commuting. Wi-Fi 6 is included in the specifications.
Who it suits
It suits players who want a single machine for gaming and who value a very high refresh rate, as well as students or creators who need a capable system and can accept the weight. It is less suited to people who want a thin, long-lasting laptop for travel.
What to check before you buy
- Weight and charger: about 5.7 lb before the power adapter.
- Battery life: gaming laptops typically run for a shorter time away from a socket; plan on plugging in to game.
- Operating system: it ships with Windows 10 Home, so check upgrade options and support dates on Microsoft's site.
- Ports and display output: confirm the ports match your monitors, headset and accessories.
- Storage: 1TB can fill quickly with big games; ask about upgrade options in the manual.
- Noise and heat: expect fan noise at heavy load, and use it on a hard, flat surface.
