The ASUS ROG Strix G17 (2023, model G713PI-DS94) is a 17.3-inch gaming laptop built around an AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 laptop graphics chip. It is designed for fast-paced games on a fast screen, and it is a large machine intended mostly for use at a desk.
Processor and graphics
The Ryzen 9 7945HX is a high-end mobile processor, and ASUS pairs it with an RTX 4070 laptop GPU at a 140W maximum total graphics power (TGP). TGP is the power limit available to the graphics chip. In general, a higher figure lets the same graphics chip run faster under load, so 140W is at the upper end for this class of laptop GPU. Together they are meant for modern games at high settings and for heavier creative work.
Memory and storage
The laptop has 16GB of DDR5-4800 memory and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 x4 solid-state drive. That is enough for most current games, and the fast SSD helps with loading times. A 1TB drive fills up quickly with large game libraries, so check the manual for whether you can add or swap storage.
The 240Hz QHD display
The 17.3-inch screen is QHD (2560 x 1440) with a 240Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time. A higher refresh rate gives smoother motion, but to benefit your games need to produce high frame rates. ASUS says the panel covers 100% of the DCI-P3 colour space and supports Dolby Vision and Adaptive-Sync, which matches the refresh rate to the frame rate to reduce tearing.
MUX Switch and Advanced Optimus
A MUX switch lets the graphics chip send frames directly to the display, bypassing the integrated graphics. ASUS says this raises gaming performance by 5-10%. With Advanced Optimus, the laptop switches between integrated and dedicated graphics automatically, based on the task, to save battery life.
Cooling
ASUS uses Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal on the processor, among other cooling features, aiming for better sustained performance over long sessions. Liquid-metal compounds conduct heat better than regular paste, but because they are conductive, they are not something to disturb. Leave any internal servicing to qualified technicians.
Software and connectivity
The laptop runs Windows 11 and has Wi-Fi 6E. ASUS also lists a 90-day Xbox Game Pass Ultimate pass with the machine, but offers like this have end dates, so check the current terms.
Size and weight
It measures about 15.6 x 11.1 x 1.2 inches and weighs 5.9 lb (about 2.7 kg). A 17-inch gaming laptop is typically carried occasionally rather than daily, and a high-wattage charger adds to the load.
Who it suits
It suits players who want a large, fast screen and desktop-class performance in a portable body. Anyone after a light laptop for travel or all-day battery life may prefer a smaller model.
What to check before you buy
- Weight and size: confirm the laptop and its charger fit your bag and desk.
- Fan noise: high-performance laptops are louder under load.
- Battery: gaming on battery is usually limited, so plan to plug in.
- Storage: check upgrade options if you have a large library.
- Ports: the listing does not detail them, so confirm that the connections for your accessories are included.
- Warranty: check the terms and what they cover.
