The ASUS ROG Strix G16 (model G614JV-AS73) is a 16-inch gaming laptop built around a 13th Gen Intel Core i7-13650HX processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU. It is meant for people who want to play current games on a single portable machine, and it also has the power for everyday multitasking. This page explains what its main specifications mean.

The processor and graphics pairing

The Core i7-13650HX is a high-power mobile chip from Intel's "HX" family, which is aimed at laptops where performance matters more than thin-and-light design. In games, the graphics card usually does most of the work, and here that is the RTX 4060 Laptop GPU. ASUS lists it at a 140W maximum total graphics power (TGP). On laptops, TGP is the amount of power the GPU is allowed to use, and a higher figure typically means the chip can run closer to its full potential.

Memory and storage

The laptop has 16GB of DDR5-4800 memory and a 512GB PCIe 4.0 x4 solid-state drive. Sixteen gigabytes is a common amount for gaming and general use. Many modern games are large, so 512GB can fill up quickly if you keep several installed. That is worth planning for, since you may want to check whether the storage can be expanded.

A 165Hz screen

The 16-inch display uses a 16:10 shape, which gives a little more vertical space than a 16:9 panel, and a Full HD resolution with a 165Hz refresh rate. A higher refresh rate means the screen updates more times per second, which typically makes motion look smoother when the game runs at matching frame rates. ASUS says the panel covers 100% of the sRGB colour space and supports Dolby Vision and Adaptive-Sync, which helps match the screen to the frame rate the GPU produces.

Cooling and the MUX switch

Gaming laptops generate a lot of heat, and ASUS puts weight on its cooling design. It says the Strix uses Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal on the CPU and adds a third intake fan, with the aim of better sustained performance over long sessions. Liquid metal is a thermal compound that conducts heat better than the usual paste.

A MUX switch lets the dedicated GPU send frames straight to the display instead of passing through the integrated graphics. ASUS says this raises gaming performance by 5-10%. With Advanced Optimus, the laptop switches between the integrated and dedicated graphics automatically depending on the task, which is intended to help battery life when you are not gaming.

Design and connectivity

ASUS describes the look as cyberpunk-inspired, with graffiti accents, a dot-matrix pattern on the lid and cross-hatched vents. The laptop ships with Windows 11 and Wi-Fi 6E. It measures about 13.9 x 10.4 x 0.9 inches and is listed at 5.5 lb, so it is portable but not light.

Who it suits

It suits students and players who want one computer for games, schoolwork and light creative tasks, and who are happy to carry a larger laptop. Anyone who mostly browses or writes documents would not need this much graphics power.

What to check before you buy

  • Weight and size: a 16-inch gaming laptop plus its power adapter is bulky in a backpack.
  • Storage: confirm how much free space you will need for your game library, and whether an extra drive can be added.
  • Battery life: gaming laptops typically run for much shorter periods on battery than they do plugged in, so plan to keep the charger nearby.
  • Noise: fans spin up under load. Headphones or a well-ventilated desk help.
  • Ports and accessories: check that the ports match your monitor, headset and other gear.

  • 165Hz Full HD 16:10 display with Adaptive-Sync and 100% sRGB.
  • Liquid-metal CPU cooling, a third intake fan and a MUX switch with Advanced Optimus.
  • Windows 11, Wi-Fi 6E, about 5.5 lb.
