The ASUS ROG Strix G16 G614JI-XS96 is a 16-inch gaming laptop with an Intel Core i9-13980HX processor, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU, 32GB of memory and a 1TB solid-state drive. It is the higher-specification sibling of the Strix G16 line, aimed at people who want a fast, sharp screen for games and demanding creative work.
Processor and graphics
The Core i9-13980HX is a 13th Gen "HX" mobile processor, a family designed for laptops that can supply and cool a lot of power. Pairing it with the RTX 4070 Laptop GPU gives a machine meant for modern games at the display's native resolution. ASUS lists the GPU at a 140W maximum total graphics power (TGP), the amount of power the graphics chip is allowed to draw. A higher TGP typically allows higher sustained speeds.
32GB of memory and a 1TB drive
The laptop has 32GB of DDR5-4800 memory and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD. Thirty-two gigabytes is generous for gaming, and helpful if you also edit video, run virtual machines or keep many browser tabs open next to a game. A terabyte of fast storage holds a sensible library of large games before you need to start uninstalling.
The ROG Nebula display
The screen is a 16-inch, 16:10 QHD panel, which is a higher resolution than Full HD, with a 240Hz refresh rate and a 3ms response time. ASUS says it covers 100% of DCI-P3, a wide colour space used in cinema, and that it is Pantone Validated. Colour coverage matters for photo and video work, while the refresh rate matters for how smooth motion looks in fast games. To use 240Hz in practice, the game needs to produce a matching number of frames per second, which varies by title and settings.
Cooling and the MUX switch
ASUS says the cooling system uses Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal on the CPU and a third intake fan, with the goal of better sustained performance in long sessions. Liquid metal is a thermal compound that conducts heat better than standard paste.
The MUX switch lets the dedicated GPU send frames directly to the display, skipping the integrated graphics. ASUS says this raises gaming performance by 5-10%. With Advanced Optimus, the laptop chooses between the integrated and dedicated graphics automatically to help battery life during lighter tasks.
Design and system
The look is cyberpunk-inspired, with graffiti accents, a dot-matrix pattern on the lid and cross-hatched vents. It runs Windows 11 Pro with Wi-Fi 6E. The listing gives dimensions of about 13.9 x 10.4 x 0.9 inches; it shows 7.0 lb, which may include packaging or the power adapter, so check the manufacturer's specification for the laptop itself.
Who it suits
It suits players who want a high-resolution, fast screen and plenty of memory, and creators who also game. If you only need a laptop for office work, a machine with less graphics power would do the job.
What to check before you buy
- Weight and bag size: with its large charger, this is a heavy carry.
- Power: high-performance laptops run best plugged in; battery life while gaming is typically short.
- Noise and heat: expect fan noise under heavy load, and keep the vents clear.
- Games and settings: a QHD panel asks more of the GPU than Full HD, so check the games you play and the settings you like.
- Ports: confirm that they suit your monitor, headset and other accessories.
