The ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2024), model G614JV-AS74, is a 16-inch gaming laptop with a 13th Gen Intel Core i7-13650HX processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU. It belongs to ASUS's ROG line, whose design takes cues from cyberpunk styling. Here is what its specs mean.

Processor and graphics

The Core i7-13650HX is a high-power laptop processor with many cores, suited to games and heavier tasks such as video editing. The RTX 4060 Laptop GPU is listed at 140W maximum TGP. TGP, total graphics power, is the amount of power the graphics chip may draw, and generally a higher figure lets the same chip run faster, within the limits of cooling.

Memory and storage

There is 16GB of DDR5-4800MHz memory and a 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD. DDR5 is the newer memory generation, and 16GB is enough for most current games and general use. PCIe Gen4 is a fast storage interface that typically cuts load times, and 1TB gives room for a modest game library. ASUS lists Wi-Fi 6E, which adds access to the 6GHz band on compatible routers.

Cooling with liquid metal

ASUS lists Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal on the CPU, plus a third intake fan. Liquid metal carries heat away from the chip better than the usual thermal paste, which ASUS says helps sustain performance over long sessions. As with any gaming laptop, expect fans to be audible under load.

Display

The screen is 16 inches, 16:10, FHD at 165Hz. ASUS lists 100% sRGB coverage and Pantone validation, which suggests suitable colour accuracy for games and everyday content. The 16:10 shape shows extra vertical space, which is useful for documents and web pages.

MUX switch and Advanced Optimus

A MUX switch lets the dedicated GPU send frames straight to the screen, skipping the integrated graphics. ASUS says this raises gaming performance by 5-10%. Advanced Optimus switches automatically between integrated and dedicated graphics based on the task, without a restart, to help battery life when you aren't gaming.

Design and extras

The lid has a dot matrix pattern and the vents are cross-hatched, with graffiti accents. The listing also includes a free 90-day trial of a games subscription service; check the terms and regional availability.

Size and weight

It measures about 13.9 x 10.4 x 0.9 inches (35.3 x 26.4 x 2.3 cm) and weighs 5.5 lb (2.5 kg).

Who it suits

It suits gamers who want a laptop with a high-power graphics chip, fast storage and a quick display, and creators who need a capable processor on the move.

What to check before you buy

  • Games and apps: compare their needs with an RTX 4060 Laptop GPU and 16GB of memory.
  • Memory upgrade: check if memory and storage can be expanded.
  • Battery and charger: high-power laptops need a large adapter, so allow for it in your bag.
  • Noise: consider headphones for long sessions.
  • Ports and warranty: check the ports you need, and warranty terms in your region.
