The ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2024), model G614JIR-AS94, is a 16-inch gaming laptop built around an Intel Core i9-14900HX processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 laptop GPU. It is aimed at players who want desktop-style performance in a portable machine. Here is what the main specifications mean.
Processor and graphics
The 14th Gen Intel Core i9-14900HX is a high-power mobile processor, the kind found in performance laptops rather than thin ones. It has many cores, which helps with games, streaming and video work at the same time. The GeForce RTX 4070 laptop GPU runs at a maximum total graphics power (TGP) of 140W, according to ASUS. TGP is the amount of power the GPU is allowed to draw; a higher figure typically allows higher sustained performance, though cooling matters too.
Memory and storage
The laptop has 16GB of DDR5-5600 memory and a 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD. DDR5-5600 is a fast memory type, and 16GB is a common amount for gaming. A PCIe Gen4 SSD is much faster than a hard drive or an older SATA drive, which shortens game loading times. A 1TB drive holds a handful of large modern games, though it fills up quickly.
The ROG Nebula display
The 16-inch screen has a 16:10 aspect ratio, which gives a little more vertical space than 16:9 for browsing and work. ASUS lists QHD resolution, a 240Hz refresh rate, 3ms response time, 100% DCI-P3 colour coverage and Pantone validation. A 240Hz panel redraws the picture 240 times per second, which can look smoother in fast games if the GPU can deliver the frames. DCI-P3 is a wide colour space used in film, and is useful for content creation as well as gaming.
Cooling
ASUS's ROG Intelligent Cooling uses Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal on the CPU, plus a third intake fan. Liquid metal conducts heat better than standard thermal paste, and ASUS says the design supports better sustained performance over long sessions. High-power laptops still run warm and loud under load, which is normal for the category.
MUX Switch and Advanced Optimus
A MUX Switch lets the GPU send frames directly to the screen. ASUS says this increases gaming performance by 5-10%. Advanced Optimus switches automatically between the integrated and dedicated graphics depending on the task, with no restart, to help battery life.
Design and size
The design takes inspiration from cyberpunk aesthetics, with graffiti accents, a dot matrix pattern on the lid and cross-hatched vents. The laptop is 13.9 x 10.4 inches with a thickness of about 0.9 inches, and weighs 5.5 lb. It runs Windows 11 and has Wi-Fi 6E.
Who it suits
It suits gamers who want a portable high-performance machine, and creators who want a fast CPU and a colour-rich screen. It is bulkier than an ultrabook and a high-power laptop will have shorter battery life away from a charger.
What to check before you buy
- Charger and bag: performance laptops use large power adapters; allow room in your bag.
- Noise and heat: expect fan noise under load, and use it on a hard, flat surface.
- Storage: 1TB fills quickly with big games; check for extra drive support in the manual.
- Games you play: check the requirements of your favourite titles against the RTX 4070 and 16GB.
- Ports: confirm the port list covers your monitor, headset and accessories.
- Included offers: promotional subscriptions have expiry dates, so check the terms.
