The ASUS ROG Strix G16 (model G614JIR-XS96) is a 16-inch gaming laptop built around an Intel Core i9-14900HX processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU. It is aimed at people who want desktop-style gaming and heavy creative work in a machine they can carry between rooms or to a LAN event. Here is what the main specifications mean in practice.

Processor, graphics and memory

The Core i9-14900HX is a 14th Gen Intel chip from the high-power "HX" family. HX processors typically have many cores and run at higher power than the thin-and-light chips found in ultrabooks, which helps in games, video encoding and compiling code. The graphics come from an RTX 4070 Laptop GPU, which ASUS lists at a 140W maximum total graphics power (TGP). TGP matters because laptop GPUs with the same name can be tuned to very different power limits, and a higher limit generally allows higher sustained frame rates.

Memory is 32GB of DDR5-5600, which is generous for gaming and comfortable for running a browser, chat apps and a game at the same time. Storage is a 1TB PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD, the connection type that gives fast loading times compared with older SATA drives.

A 16:10 QHD screen at 240Hz

The display is 16 inches with a 16:10 shape, QHD resolution (2560 x 1600 on most panels of this type), a 240Hz refresh rate and a stated 3ms response time. ASUS says it covers 100% of the DCI-P3 colour space and carries Pantone Validation. A high refresh rate is most useful in fast competitive games, where the screen can show many more frames per second than a standard 60Hz panel. DCI-P3 coverage is relevant for photo and video editing, as it is a wider gamut than basic sRGB.

Cooling and sustained performance

ASUS uses Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal on the CPU in place of ordinary thermal paste, plus a third intake fan. Liquid metal conducts heat better than paste, and the aim is steadier performance over long sessions. As with any gaming laptop, fan noise rises under load, and the chassis will feel warm near the keyboard's upper area during demanding games.

MUX Switch and Advanced Optimus

A MUX Switch lets the GPU send frames straight to the display instead of passing through the processor's integrated graphics. ASUS says this raises gaming performance by 5-10%. Advanced Optimus switches automatically between the integrated and dedicated GPU depending on the task, which is meant to save battery when you are not gaming.

Design, size and weight

The styling draws on cyberpunk looks, with a dot-matrix pattern on the lid, graffiti accents and cross-hatched vents. The laptop measures about 13.9 x 10.4 inches and 0.9 inches thick (roughly 35 x 26 x 2.3 cm) and weighs 5.5 lb (about 2.5 kg), before the power adapter. It runs Windows 11 Pro and has Wi-Fi 6E.

Who it suits

It suits gamers and creators who want a single machine for both, and who are happy to trade some portability for power. It is less suited to people who mainly need a light laptop for travel and long battery life.

What to check before you buy

  • Weight and bag size: a 16-inch gaming laptop with a large power brick is heavier than most work laptops.
  • Games you play: check the recommended specs of your favourite titles against an RTX 4070-class GPU and QHD resolution.
  • Noise: gaming laptops can be loud under load, so consider headphones or a spot away from quiet spaces.
  • Ports and accessories: confirm the ports you need on the model's spec sheet, such as the display output for an external monitor.
  • Upkeep: check the manual for how to clean vents and what the warranty covers.

The short version

  • 16-inch gaming laptop with Core i9-14900HX and GeForce RTX 4070 (140W max TGP).
  • 32GB DDR5-5600 memory and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD.
  • 16:10 QHD display at 240Hz, with 100% DCI-P3 and Pantone Validation, per ASUS.
  • Liquid-metal CPU cooling, three intake fans and a MUX Switch with Advanced Optimus.
  • 5.5 lb, Windows 11 Pro, Wi-Fi 6E.
