The ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2023), model G614JU-ES94, is a 16-inch gaming laptop in Eclipse Gray. It pairs a 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13980HX processor with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 laptop GPU and a fast QHD display. It is meant for gaming and heavier work on the move. Here is what the main specs mean.

Processor and graphics balance

The Core i9-13980HX is a high-power mobile processor with many cores, suited to tasks such as video encoding, compiling code and running games alongside other apps. The graphics side is an RTX 4050 Laptop GPU at 140W maximum TGP. TGP is the total power the graphics system may draw, and a higher figure typically lets the same GPU run faster. Many games depend more on the GPU than the CPU, so this is a powerful processor paired with an entry-level member of NVIDIA's RTX 40 series.

Memory and storage

ASUS lists 16GB of DDR5-4800MHz memory and a 1TB PCIe 4x4 SSD. Sixteen gigabytes is a common amount for current gaming, and DDR5 offers more bandwidth than DDR4. The SSD should keep load times short. Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6E are listed for wireless connections; Wi-Fi 6E adds access to the 6 GHz band, which needs a compatible router to be useful.

The Nebula display

The ROG Nebula display is a 16-inch QHD panel with 240Hz refresh and a 3ms response time. ASUS says it covers 100% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut and carries Pantone Validation. A wide colour gamut helps with photo and video work, and 240Hz makes fast action look smoother if the GPU can draw enough frames.

MUX switch and Advanced Optimus

A MUX switch lets the discrete GPU send frames directly to the display, skipping the integrated graphics. ASUS says this increases gaming performance by 5-10%. With Advanced Optimus, the laptop switches between integrated and discrete graphics automatically according to the task, which is meant to help battery life when you are not gaming.

Cooling

Fast chips create heat. ASUS uses Thermal Grizzly's Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal on the CPU and a third intake fan, among other features, for better sustained performance in long sessions. The laptop is 13.9 inches wide, 10.4 inches deep, 0.9 inches thick and weighs 6.7 lb.

Who it suits

It suits players and creators who want a large, colour-focused, high-refresh screen and a very capable processor in a laptop. If the highest graphics performance is the main goal, compare GPU tiers carefully, as this model's strength is in its processor and display.

What to check before you buy

  • Weight and charger. At 6.7 lb plus the adapter, consider your bag.
  • Noise and heat. Expect fan noise under heavy load.
  • Memory and storage plans. Check whether you may want more than 16GB or 1TB.
  • Games you play. Compare the GPU with the recommended specs for your titles.
  • Router. You need a Wi-Fi 6E router to use the 6 GHz band.
  • Warranty and return terms.
