The ASUS ROG Strix G15 (2022), model G513RM-IS74, is a 15.6-inch gaming laptop that pairs an AMD Ryzen 7 6800H processor with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 graphics chip. It ships with Windows 11 Home and is aimed at players who want a fast screen and a capable GPU in a portable machine.

Processor and memory

The Ryzen 7 6800H is an 8-core, 16-thread mobile processor with 20MB of cache and a maximum boost of up to 4.7 GHz. The "H" in the name marks a higher-power laptop chip. The laptop has 16GB of DDR5 memory at 4800MHz and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD. ASUS describes its design as easy to upgrade, though the manual is the place to check which parts can be changed.

Graphics and the MUX switch

The RTX 3060 has 6GB of GDDR6 memory. ASUS lists ROG Boost up to 1752MHz at 140W, made up of 115W plus 25W through Dynamic Boost, which shifts power between processor and GPU. The laptop also has a MUX switch, which lets the GPU talk directly to the display. That bypasses the processor's integrated graphics, which ASUS says increases performance and lowers latency.

The 300Hz display

The 15.6-inch IPS-type screen is Full HD (1920 x 1080) with a 300Hz refresh rate and 3ms response. A higher refresh rate shows more frames per second, which can make fast games look smoother, but only if the game runs at high frame rates. At 1080p, the RTX 3060 is typically better matched to high-refresh play than to higher resolutions.

Cooling

ASUS describes ROG Intelligent Cooling: Liquid Metal Conductonaut Extreme thermal compound, Arc Flow fans and 0dB Ambient Cooling, which stops the fans at low loads. Liquid metal conducts heat better than standard paste. Gaming laptops can be loud under load, so this is worth reading about in the manual.

Connectivity and lighting

Wireless is Wi-Fi 6E with RangeBoost and Bluetooth 5.2. Ports include an RJ45 LAN port, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports (one supports DisplayPort) and two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports. The 4-zone RGB keyboard, RGB light bar and backlit logo work with AURA Sync, and the swappable Armor Caps let you customise the look. The listing notes a QWERTY keyboard layout.

Size

It measures 13.9 x 10.2 x 0.9 inches and weighs 7.0 lb, so it is a laptop to carry between desk and bag, not all day.

Who it suits

It suits gamers who want strong 1080p performance with a high-refresh screen in a laptop rather than a desktop, and who are happy to plug it in for best performance.

What to check before you buy

  • Games you play: confirm they run well at 1080p on an RTX 3060 with 6GB.
  • Weight and charger: at 7.0 lb plus a power adapter, check it suits your carrying habits.
  • Noise: performance modes can raise fan noise.
  • Battery: gaming on battery typically cuts performance, so check ASUS's figures.
  • Keyboard layout: it is QWERTY; check the legends suit you.
