The ASUS ProArt GeForce RTX 4080 Super OC Edition (model PROART-RTX4080S-O16G) is a high-end graphics card with 16GB of GDDR6X memory. It is aimed at people who split their time between creative software and games, and it adds NVIDIA's AI-assisted rendering and video tools to the usual horsepower. Here is what the main specs mean in practice.

What the Ada Lovelace architecture brings

The card is built on NVIDIA's Ada Lovelace generation. NVIDIA states that its Streaming Multiprocessors deliver up to twice the performance and energy efficiency of the previous generation. Those multiprocessors are the general-purpose cores that do most of the work in rendering, video effects and compute tasks.

Two other kinds of core sit alongside them. The 3rd-generation RT cores handle ray tracing, the technique that calculates how light bounces around a scene, and the listing quotes up to twice the ray tracing performance. The 4th-generation Tensor cores run AI workloads, and with DLSS 3 they are described as giving up to four times the performance of brute-force rendering. DLSS 3 works by rendering fewer pixels natively and using AI to reconstruct and generate frames, so it only helps in games and apps that support it.

The OC edition clock speeds

ASUS lists two operating modes: 2640 MHz in OC mode and 2610 MHz in standard mode. The gap is small, about one percent, so day-to-day differences are likely to be modest. Boost speeds in general depend on temperature and power, so real figures vary with case airflow and workload.

NVIDIA Studio and the ProArt line

ProArt is ASUS's creator-focused branding. The card supports NVIDIA Studio, which pairs RTX hardware with Studio drivers. These drivers are typically tested against popular creative applications for stability, and they enable AI-accelerated features in video editing, 3D and design software. If you work with large scenes or high-resolution footage, the 16GB of video memory gives you headroom for bigger textures and projects than a smaller card allows.

Ports and the PCIe 4.0 interface

For displays, the card has one HDMI 2.1a and three DisplayPort 1.4a outputs, so a multi-monitor desk is possible without adapters. The card connects to the motherboard over PCIe 4.0. It is also backwards compatible with older slots, though a slower slot may limit performance slightly in some workloads.

Who it suits

This card suits someone building or upgrading a desktop for video editing, 3D work or AI-assisted creative tasks who also wants to play demanding games. It is a large component, so it is better suited to a full-size desktop than to a compact system.

What to check before you buy

  • Size: ASUS lists the card at 11.8 inches (about 30 cm) long and 4.7 inches (about 12 cm) wide. Measure your case's clearance for graphics cards and check how many expansion slots it occupies.
  • Power: Cards in this class usually need a robust power supply and specific power connectors. Check the manufacturer's recommended power supply wattage and the connectors your supply provides.
  • Slot: You need a free PCIe x16 slot on your motherboard.
  • Weight: At 2.4 lb (about 1.1 kg), a support bracket may help if your case is mounted upright.
  • Displays: Confirm your monitors use HDMI or DisplayPort and that cables support the resolution and refresh rate you want.
  • Software: Check that the creative or gaming applications you use support RTX features and DLSS 3.

The short version

  • 16GB GDDR6X graphics card with NVIDIA Ada Lovelace architecture, 3rd-gen RT cores and 4th-gen Tensor cores.
  • OC mode runs at 2640 MHz, standard mode at 2610 MHz.
  • Supports NVIDIA Studio drivers and DLSS 3 in compatible software.
  • Outputs: one HDMI 2.1a and three DisplayPort 1.4a, over a PCIe 4.0 interface.
  • Large and heavy, so confirm case space and power supply before choosing it.
