The ASUS Prime Radeon RX 9070 XT OC Edition (model PRIME-RX9070XT-O16G) is a PCIe 5.0 graphics card with 16GB of GDDR6 memory. It is built around a three-fan cooler that ASUS sizes at 2.5 slots, which makes it a candidate for compact cases as well as full towers. It is aimed at people who want a high-end Radeon card without the bulk of the largest designs.
What the OC Edition and 16GB of memory mean
An "OC Edition" card is factory-tuned to run at higher clock speeds than the reference design. ASUS lists a 3030MHz clock for this model. Clock speed is only one part of performance, but a factory overclock means you get the higher setting without adjusting anything yourself.
The 16GB of GDDR6 is the video memory that holds textures, frame buffers and, for creative work, large scenes or timelines. More video memory generally gives headroom for high-resolution textures and demanding projects. The card offers HDMI and three DisplayPort outputs, so a multi-monitor desk is possible.
How the cooling is put together
Cooling is the centre of this design. ASUS describes three Axial-tech fans with a smaller hub, which allows longer blades, plus a barrier ring that raises downward air pressure. The company says this lowers temperatures and noise while improving performance.
Other cooling details from the brand:
- Phase-change thermal pad: it melts as the card warms up to fill small gaps between the GPU and the cooler, improving heat transfer.
- MaxContact design: a manufacturing process that ASUS says enlarges the heat spreader surface over the GPU by 5%, improving temperatures by up to 2°C.
- Vented backplate: large openings let more air move through the card.
- Dual-ball fan bearings: ASUS says they can last up to twice as long as sleeve bearings.
0dB mode and the dual BIOS switch
All three fans stop when GPU temperature is below 55°C and start again above 60°C, so light tasks such as browsing or less demanding games can be close to silent. A dual BIOS switch lets you choose between a Performance profile and a Quiet profile, which is useful if the same PC is used for both heavy games and late-night work.
Built to be sturdy
Large graphics cards are heavy, and sag can stress the slot. ASUS says its GPU Guard applies adhesive at the four corners of the GPU, and a bracket spreads mounting pressure evenly. A metal backplate adds rigidity, and the mounting bracket is grade 304 stainless steel. The card weighs about 2.6 lb (1.2 kg) and is about 12.3 in (31 cm) long.
Software
GPU Tweak III is ASUS's utility for tuning clocks, fan curves and monitoring. It is optional; the card works with the standard AMD drivers.
Who it suits
This card is for builders who want a current-generation Radeon with a moderately sized cooler, particularly those assembling a small-form-factor PC. It also suits anyone who values a quiet idle thanks to the fan-stop behaviour.
What to check before you buy
- Length and thickness: measure the space in your case. The card is roughly 12.3 in long and occupies 2.5 slots.
- Power supply: check ASUS's recommended power supply wattage and the number and type of power connectors your supply provides.
- Slot: it uses PCIe 5.0 but should work in older PCIe slots; confirm your motherboard has a free x16 slot.
- Monitor ports: confirm your displays can use HDMI or DisplayPort.
- Case airflow: the fans draw on side-panel ventilation, so a case with room beside the card helps.
- Software and drivers: check that your operating system is supported.
The short version
- A PCIe 5.0 Radeon RX 9070 XT with 16GB of GDDR6 and a factory overclock.
- Three Axial-tech fans, a phase-change thermal pad and a 2.5-slot cooler.
- Fans stop at light loads, and a dual BIOS switch offers Performance and Quiet profiles.
- Reinforced with a backplate, GPU Guard and a stainless steel bracket.
- Measure your case and check your power supply before fitting.
