The ASUS ExpertBook CX54 Chromebook Plus (model CX5403CMA-DB588) is a thin 14-inch laptop that runs ChromeOS on an Intel Core Ultra 5 processor. ASUS aims it at work and study, with a high-resolution screen, an aluminium body and a set of AI-powered features. Here is what the specs mean and what a Chromebook can and can't do.

ChromeOS and what "Plus" means

ChromeOS is a browser-centred operating system. Apps are web-based, Android-based or Linux-based, and the system starts quickly and updates itself. The "Plus" label marks Chromebooks that meet a higher hardware level than standard models. ASUS says this one offers 2x the power, speed, memory and storage of top-selling Chromebooks from July to December 2022, a comparison that is the brand's own.

Processor, memory and storage

The laptop has an Intel Core Ultra 5 processor, 8 GB of RAM and a 128 GB SSD. ChromeOS is light on resources, so 8 GB typically goes further than it would on Windows. The 128 GB drive is modest, though, and ChromeOS leans on cloud storage for large libraries. Many users keep files in the cloud and use the SSD for apps and offline work.

A sharp 14-inch screen

The display is 14 inches at 2560 x 1600 (WUXGA, as ASUS labels it) with an anti-glare finish. That is a sharp resolution for the size, giving crisp text, and an anti-glare finish helps in bright rooms. ASUS also mentions a high-definition camera, and video-call tools that adjust clarity, lighting and sound and blur the background.

AI-powered features

Chromebook Plus includes features such as Magic Eraser for removing distractions from photos, noise cancelation, and video-call enhancement, along with generative AI tools for writing and image backgrounds. The listing also describes a promotional offer for Google One AI Premium and 2 TB of cloud storage for a limited period. Its terms include eligibility rules and a redemption deadline that has since passed, so confirm what applies now.

Build, security and portability

The chassis is aluminium, and ASUS says it has military-grade durability. At about 12.4 x 8.8 x 0.7 inches (31.5 x 22.4 x 1.8 cm) and 2.9 lb (1.3 kg), it fits easily in a bag. A fingerprint sensor provides fast sign-in. ASUS says battery life is long, but no hours are given in the listing.

Who it suits

It suits students, remote workers and anyone whose work lives in a browser, Google's apps or Android apps. It is less suited to people who need Windows-only or macOS-only software.

What to check before you buy

  • Your software: confirm that the apps you need run on ChromeOS or in a browser.
  • Storage: consider whether 128 GB plus cloud storage is enough.
  • Update support: check the Auto Update Expiration date for this model on Google's support page.
  • Ports: the listing doesn't list ports, so check what you need, such as HDMI or USB-A.
  • Offer terms: confirm whether any bundled subscription is still available.
  • Battery: check the specification for hours of use.
