The ASUS Dual Radeon RX 7800 XT OC Edition (model DUAL-RX7800XT-O16G) is a gaming graphics card built around AMD's RX 7800 XT chip and 16GB of GDDR6 memory. It sits in a desktop PC's PCIe slot and does the heavy lifting for games, ray-traced lighting and other graphics work. Here is what its listed features mean in practice.
What the OC Edition means
"OC" stands for factory overclocked. ASUS lists an OC mode of up to 2520 MHz, which is a higher boost clock than a card running to the chip's reference settings. Boost clocks are a ceiling rather than a constant speed: the card typically raises and lowers its clock depending on workload, temperature and power. Factory overclocks like this are set by the maker, so they're intended to run within the card's design limits.
Memory and display outputs
The card carries 16GB of GDDR6. Video memory holds textures, frame buffers and other game data, and higher resolutions and detailed texture packs generally call for more of it. Sixteen gigabytes is a generous amount for gaming at 1440p, and it gives headroom for higher resolutions too.
For connections, the listing names PCIe 4.0, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.1. HDMI 2.1 is what high-refresh 4K televisions and monitors typically use, and DisplayPort 2.1 is the newer DisplayPort standard with more bandwidth for very high resolutions and refresh rates. You'll still need a monitor or cable that supports the standard to benefit.
Cooling: Axial-tech fans and ball bearings
Cooling is where the "Dual" in the name comes from, as the card uses two fans. ASUS says its Axial-tech design uses a smaller fan hub, which leaves room for longer blades, and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure toward the heatsink.
The fans use dual ball bearings. ASUS says these can last up to twice as long as sleeve-bearing designs, which matters because the fan is one of the few moving parts on a graphics card.
Build details
A protective backplate covers the rear of the board. ASUS says it prevents the circuit board from flexing and protects the traces, which is useful on a heavy card that hangs from one slot. The brand also says its Auto-Extreme manufacturing process uses automation to enhance reliability.
ASUS describes the card as supporting AMD's ray tracing technology. Ray tracing simulates how light behaves in a scene, producing more realistic reflections and shadows in games that support it, at the expense of extra processing work.
Size and weight
The listing gives the length as 11.0 inches (about 28 cm), the width as 5.2 inches (about 13 cm) and the weight as 2.1 lb (about 1 kg). The listing doesn't give a thickness, so check ASUS's specifications for the slot width before assuming it fits beside other cards or components.
Who it suits
It suits desktop PC builders and upgraders who want a graphics card with 16GB of memory for modern games, and who have a case and power supply with room for it. It isn't a laptop part and needs a free PCIe slot.
What to check before you buy
- Case clearance: compare the card's length and thickness with the space in your case, including any radiator or drive cage in the way.
- Power supply: check the manufacturer's recommended power supply wattage and the power connectors the card needs, and confirm your supply provides them.
- Motherboard slot: the card uses PCIe 4.0 and generally works in other PCIe generations, though check your board's slot.
- Monitor and cables: confirm your display has the inputs you want to use.
- Support and drivers: check the current driver and warranty terms on the manufacturer's site.
