The ASUS Dual Radeon RX 6600 XT OC Edition (model DUAL-RX6600XT-O8G) is a graphics card for desktop PCs built on AMD's RDNA 2 architecture. It has 8GB of GDDR6 memory and two fans, and ASUS describes it as favouring substance over style. It is a mid-sized card aimed at gaming builds that do not need a very large cooler.

What RDNA 2 and 8GB of GDDR6 mean

RDNA 2 is AMD's graphics architecture used across the Radeon RX 6000 series. The RX 6600 XT sits in the mid-range of that line, which is generally associated with smooth 1080p gaming and, in many titles, playable 1440p. Actual frame rates depend on the game, settings and the rest of your system.

The card has 8GB of GDDR6 video memory. Video memory stores textures and frame data, and 8GB is typically enough for most 1080p games at high settings, though the newest titles at the highest texture settings can use more. The interface is PCIe 4.0.

Outputs

The card offers HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4a. HDMI 2.1 supports high-resolution, high-refresh signals on displays and TVs that also support it, and DisplayPort 1.4a is common on gaming monitors.

Cooling and build features

The "OC Edition" label means ASUS configures the card with higher clock speeds than AMD's reference settings. ASUS lists these design features:

  • Axial-tech fan design: a smaller fan hub allows longer blades, and a barrier ring raises the downward air pressure.
  • Dual ball fan bearings: ASUS says they can last up to twice as long as sleeve bearings.
  • 0dB Technology: mentioned in the listing title; on ASUS cards it normally means the fans stop at low load, such as when browsing or watching video. Check the manual for the exact behaviour.
  • Auto-Extreme Technology: an automated manufacturing process that ASUS says enhances reliability.
  • Protective backplate: it helps prevent the circuit board from flexing and protects the traces.

Size

The card measures about 9.6 inches in length and 5.3 inches in height, and weighs 1.6 lb (roughly 24 x 13.5 cm and 0.7 kg). That is shorter than most high-end cards, so it fits in many mid-tower and some compact cases.

Who it suits

It suits builders putting together or upgrading a PC for 1080p or 1440p gaming, and people who want a quiet card at idle in a case without a lot of space. It is not aimed at 4K gaming at maximum settings or at very heavy professional workloads.

What to check before you buy

  • Case space: measure the length and height available, plus slot width.
  • Power supply: confirm your power supply's wattage and the right power connector, as listed in the manual and on AMD's and ASUS's pages.
  • Motherboard slot: it uses PCIe 4.0 and is expected to work in older PCIe slots, though check the manufacturer's notes.
  • Monitor connection: match the HDMI and DisplayPort outputs to your screen.
  • Processor pairing: an old processor can limit a modern graphics card.
  • Drivers: download current drivers from the manufacturer and follow the manual for installation.

The short version

  • Radeon RX 6600 XT OC Edition with 8GB of GDDR6 and AMD RDNA 2.
  • PCIe 4.0, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4a outputs.
  • Axial-tech dual fans, ball bearings and a protective backplate.
  • 0dB fan-stop technology listed, so the card can run silently at light loads.
  • Compact: about 9.6 inches long and 1.6 lb.
