The ASUS Chromebook C523NA-DH02 is a 15.6-inch laptop running Chrome OS, Google's browser-based operating system. It has a 180-degree hinge, a narrow-bezel display and a metallic silver finish. ASUS pitches it at note-taking in class, presentations and everyday browsing.

What Chrome OS means

Chrome OS is built around the Chrome browser and web apps. It starts quickly and updates automatically, and ASUS says it includes built-in virus protection. It is not Windows, so Windows-only programs won't run, although Chromebooks typically support web apps, Android apps and some Linux apps, depending on the model and settings. Check that the software you rely on has a web or Chrome OS version.

Display and hinge

The 15.6-inch screen is HD (1366 x 768) with an anti-glare coating that ASUS says reduces reflections, and a NanoEdge ultra-narrow bezel. HD resolution at this size is fairly coarse compared with Full HD panels, which matters mostly for fine text and for viewing many windows at once. The 180-degree hinge lets the laptop lie flat, which ASUS says is handy for sharing content with someone across a table.

Processor, memory and storage

The laptop has an Intel Dual-Core Celeron N3350 processor (2M cache, up to 2.4 GHz), 4GB of DDR3 RAM and 32GB of eMMC storage. Chrome OS is light, so such specs typically suit browsing, documents, streaming and video calls. Heavy multitasking with many tabs can use up 4GB of RAM, and 32GB leaves limited room for local files. Many Chromebook users rely on cloud storage, and some models can add storage with a USB drive.

Ports

ASUS lists USB Type-C (Gen 1) and Type-A ports. The full port layout, including any card reader, is in the manual or on the ASUS product page.

Size and weight

It measures about 14.1 x 9.8 x 0.6 inches (35.8 x 24.9 x 1.5 cm) and weighs 3.2 lb (about 1.45 kg). Light enough to carry daily, though a 15.6-inch frame is larger than the common 11 to 14-inch Chromebook.

Who it suits

It suits students, people who live mostly in a browser, and households wanting a simple shared laptop for email, web, documents and video. A larger screen than most Chromebooks also suits people who prefer bigger text.

What to check before you buy

  • Software: confirm your programs and school or work tools run on Chrome OS.
  • Update support: Chrome OS devices have an automatic update expiry date; check Google's published date for this model.
  • Storage: 32GB is small for offline files, so plan on cloud storage.
  • Display: check that 1366 x 768 suits your eyes and your tasks.
  • Accessories: USB-C and USB-A cover many devices, but you may need adapters for others.
