The APC Smart-UPS SMT1500C is a 1500VA / 1000W uninterruptible power supply (UPS). It keeps connected equipment running from a battery during a power cut and conditions the power it receives. APC aims it at servers, switches, routers and other networking gear in small and medium-sized businesses. Here is what the specs mean and what to check.
What a UPS does
A UPS sits between the wall outlet and your equipment. When mains power fails, it switches to its battery within a very short time, so computers and network devices can keep running or shut down safely. Most also guard against spikes and surges. This model is line interactive, a common design that passes mains power through while regulating it, and switches to battery when needed.
1500VA and 1000W
Two numbers describe capacity. VA (volt-amperes) is the apparent power and watts is the real power the UPS can deliver. APC lists this unit at 1500VA / 1000W. To size a UPS, add up the wattage of everything you plan to connect and keep that total comfortably below 1000W. The load also determines how long the battery lasts, so a lighter load typically runs longer.
Pure sine wave output
APC describes the output as pure sine wave. This matches the smooth waveform of mains power. Some equipment, notably devices with active power factor correction power supplies, can behave better on a sine wave than on the stepped waveform some simpler UPS units produce when on battery. Check your equipment's manual if unsure.
Automatic voltage regulation
AVR adjusts high and low input voltages to a safe level without switching to the battery. APC says this helps preserve the life of the battery, since the battery is used less often for minor voltage changes.
Outlets
The listing gives an input of NEMA 5-15P and eight NEMA 5-15R outlets, which are the standard 120V North American plug and sockets. APC's description also refers to battery backup and surge protection on six outlets with one switchable outlet group, so confirm in the manual which outlets are battery-backed and which can be switched on and off.
SmartConnect and battery management
APC SmartConnect is a remote monitoring feature accessed through a secure portal. It gives automatic notifications, firmware updates and support services. For units bought or registered after August 1, 2023, APC says SmartConnect comes as a 6-month free trial. The brand also lists an automatic green mode for efficiency, and temperature-compensated charging that is meant to extend battery life.
Warranty
APC lists a 3-year repair-or-replace warranty, excluding the battery, and 2 years for the battery. The listing also mentions a connected equipment protection policy; read its terms before relying on it.
Size and weight
The unit measures about 23.2 x 13.0 x 13.0 inches (59 x 33 x 33 cm) and weighs 54.2 lb (about 24.6 kg), largely because of its battery. Plan the location carefully, as it's heavy to lift.
Who it suits
It suits a small office, network closet or home lab where servers, switches and routers need to ride through short outages or shut down cleanly. It's not intended to run heavy loads for hours.
What to check before you buy
- Total load: add up your equipment's watts and compare it with 1000W.
- Runtime: check APC's runtime charts for your load.
- Outlets and plugs: confirm the plug types and which outlets are battery-backed.
- Space and weight: the unit is large and heavy.
- Battery replacement: batteries wear out and need replacing over time.
- Electrical safety: follow local electrical codes and the manual for connection and placement.
The short version
- 1500VA / 1000W line-interactive pure sine wave UPS.
- Automatic voltage regulation and eight NEMA 5-15R outlets.
- SmartConnect remote monitoring, with a 6-month free trial on newer units.
- 3-year warranty (2 years on the battery).
- About 54 lb (24.6 kg); check load, runtime and outlet layout.
