The WORX WG430 is a stand-alone electric leaf mulcher. You tip leaves into the hopper on top, and they are shredded and drop into a bag attached beneath. It is aimed at gardeners who want to turn fall leaves into mulch or compost material and haul away far fewer bags.
Trimmer line instead of blades
Most shredders use metal blades. The WG430 uses WORX's Flex-a-Line system, which spins lengths of heavy-duty grass-trimmer line at high speed to break up leaves. WORX presents this as a safer approach than exposed metal blades. The line wears and is replaceable, and cutting line is included. Line replacement becomes part of regular upkeep, much like a string trimmer.
What the numbers mean
- 13 amp motor, 8,500 RPM: the motor size and spin speed given by WORX.
- 53 gallons per minute: how much leaf volume WORX says the machine can process. Real speed depends on how dry, packed and fine the leaves are.
- 11:1 mulch ratio: about 11 bags of whole leaves reduce to one bag of mulch.
- 13-inch cut diameter: the wide mouth means you needn't feed leaves a handful at a time.
Shredded leaves break down faster than whole ones. They are commonly used as mulch around plants, or added to a compost heap, where the finer pieces help it decompose.
Bagging
A bag support ring is included, but the bag itself is not. A universal bag holder lets you attach a bag you already own, so mulch falls into it directly. Bagging as you go means the mulch is ready to carry to a garden bed or compost bin.
Size, weight and storage
The machine weighs 20 lb (about 9 kg), heavy enough to stay put as it runs and light enough to move around the yard. Its footprint is about 22.6 x 22.6 inches (57 x 57 cm), and it stands 13.2 inches (34 cm) tall. WORX says assembly needs no tools, and the parts nest together for off-season storage on a shelf.
The motor has a clean-air cooling system, which WORX says reduces dust drawn into the motor.
Who it suits
It suits homeowners with trees who face a large annual pile of leaves and want to process them at one spot. It is corded, so it works near an outlet. It is not a leaf collector, so you still need to rake or blow leaves to the hopper.
What to check before you buy
- Power: a nearby outlet or a suitable outdoor extension cord.
- Bags: have yard bags ready to fit the support ring.
- Debris: read the manual on what can go in; twigs are limited.
- Spare line: keep spare trimmer line of the type the manual specifies.
- Dust and noise: wear eye, ear and dust protection as the manual advises.
- Storage space: the parts nest, but allow shelf space.
