The ECOVACS GOAT O1000 RTK is a robotic lawn mower designed for lawns of about a quarter acre. Its main selling point is that it doesn't need a perimeter wire: instead of burying a cable around the lawn, you map the area with the app and the mower follows that map.

Wire-free mapping

Traditional robotic mowers rely on a boundary wire laid around the edge. ECOVACS says the GOAT O1000 uses AI to recognise and memorise the lawn's boundaries, and an automated mapping system to produce a layout of the yard without wires. The RTK in the name refers to real-time kinematic positioning, a satellite navigation method that typically improves accuracy over standard GPS, usually with help from a nearby reference station. Check the manual for what is included and how it is set up, and for how it handles areas with tree cover.

Cutting patterns and edges

ECOVACS lists zero-edge cutting, a TruEdge consistent edge mowing feature and LELS navigation. The mower follows boundaries and mows in U-shaped patterns, which the brand says give full coverage and reduce the need for manual trimming. Results at fences, walls and flower beds depend on the layout, so some hand trimming may still be needed in tricky spots.

Obstacle avoidance

AIVI 3D obstacle avoidance is meant to detect objects, pets and small wildlife such as hedgehogs, and steer around them. As with any camera-based system, it is sensible to clear toys, hoses and tools from the lawn before a run, and to follow the manual's safety guidance, including around children and animals.

Slopes, narrow paths and weather

The listing gives a slim body of 1.31 ft that can pass through paths as narrow as 2.3 ft. ECOVACS lists a climbing ability of 45% (24°), which it says reaches all corners of a yard, and IPX6 water protection. IPX6 typically means protection against powerful water jets. The slope figure applies to a firm, dry surface, so check your steepest slope and keep to the manual's limits.

App control

In the app you can add, merge, split or delete areas, set paths between zones and define no-go areas. Settings such as cutting speed, cutting height, obstacle avoidance height and mowing direction can be customised per zone, and mowing can be scheduled.

Who it suits

It suits owners of a small to medium lawn who want to avoid laying wire and who like to adjust zones in an app. It is less relevant for larger properties, since the listing says it targets lawns up to a quarter acre. The mower measures about 27.8 x 11.2 x 16.9 inches.

What to check before you buy

  • Lawn size and shape: compare your lawn to the quarter-acre size the brand states.
  • Slopes: measure your steepest slope against 45% (24°).
  • Passages: confirm that gaps are wider than 2.3 ft.
  • Satellite view: check how tree cover or buildings may affect RTK positioning.
  • Storage and charging: plan for a sheltered, powered spot for the dock.
  • Upkeep: blades and wheels need regular attention, as the manual describes.
  • Safety: keep people and pets clear while it mows.
