The Worx WG323 is a cordless 10-inch chain saw that doubles as a pole saw. Attach the pole and it reaches high branches from the ground; detach it and it works as a compact chain saw for cutting fallen limbs. It runs on a 20V PowerShare battery, so there is no fuel, no cord and no pull-start.
Two tools in one
Worx says the pole attaches in a few minutes without tools, giving a reach of up to 12 feet. Fully assembled it weighs about 10 lb (4.5 kg). The listing describes the saw head as the lightweight Worx 20V chain saw (WG322.9), which Worx rates at 6.2 lb. The on/off switch sits at the bottom of the pole, so you don't need to lift the saw head to start or stop it. When the pole is attached, the battery fits at the base of the pole; used alone, it snaps into the saw.
Working overhead with any saw is hazardous. Follow the manual, wear the protective equipment it specifies, and check for power lines and the line a branch will fall along before cutting.
Auto-tension chain
Chain tension matters: a loose chain wears faster and can come off the bar, and an over-tight one strains the motor. Worx says the automatic, tool-free tension system keeps the right tension without manual adjustment.
Auto lubrication
A chain needs oil to cut smoothly and last. The saw has an automatic lubrication system and an oil level indicator. Worx notes you should fill the reservoir before use and that chain oil is sold separately.
PowerShare battery system
The WG323 comes with a 20V 2.0Ah battery and charger. Worx says the same battery works across more than 75 tools in its 20V, 40V and 80V PowerShare range, including its Jawsaw and lawn mowers. If you already own Worx batteries, you may not need another; if you don't, it can be the start of a shared-battery set. Battery capacity (Ah) affects how long you can cut on one charge, so a 2.0Ah pack suits light pruning better than long sessions.
Gas-free cutting
Worx says the saw is as fast and powerful as anything in its class. As with any battery saw, the guide cut speed and depth are generally lower than a petrol saw, so it suits trimming and light cutting rather than felling large trees.
Who it suits
It suits homeowners who prune trees and shrubs, clear storm-damaged limbs, and want to avoid ladders. It is less suited to large-diameter timber or heavy daily work.
What to check before you buy
- Branch size: the 10-inch bar limits the cut diameter, so check against the branches you have.
- Reach and weight: a pole saw gets tiring to hold overhead; try to judge whether 10 lb works for you.
- Battery: confirm you have or will get the 20V PowerShare pack and charger.
- Chain oil: the oil is sold separately.
- Upkeep: check the manual on chain sharpening, replacement chains and bar maintenance.
- Protective gear: eye, ear and head protection and gloves are standard advice.
