VEVOR's WGFS25003 is a roll of welded wire mesh, commonly called hardware cloth, measuring 24 inches wide and 50 feet long. It has a 1/2-inch square mesh, a galvanized steel wire core and a black vinyl coating. It is used for garden barriers, animal enclosures and general fencing jobs.

What hardware cloth is

Despite the name, hardware cloth is not cloth. It is a grid of steel wires welded at each crossing. That welding makes it stiffer and more resistant to being pulled apart than woven chicken wire, whose larger hexagonal holes can be bent open by determined animals. A small square opening is more suited to keeping out rodents and small pests.

What 1/2-inch mesh and 19 gauge mean

The mesh opening here is 0.5 x 0.5 inches. VEVOR says that blocks rabbits, rodents and small animals while giving a clear view and airflow. Gauge describes wire thickness, and a higher number means thinner wire. At 19 gauge, the wire is fairly light, which makes the roll easy to cut and bend while still holding a shape. For heavier-duty security, a lower gauge (thicker wire) is generally used; match the product to the animal and the job.

Galvanized wire with a vinyl coating

The steel wire is galvanized, meaning coated with zinc, which slows rust. VEVOR then adds a black vinyl coating over the zinc for what it calls double rust protection and weather resistance against sun, rain and seasonal wear. Dark coating also tends to look less obvious against soil and foliage, which many gardeners like. If the coating gets cut at the ends, those spots are more exposed to moisture over time.

Size and weight

The roll is 24 inches (610 mm) by 50 feet (15,240 mm) and weighs 12.1 lb (about 5.5 kg). VEVOR calls the roll lightweight and says it is made to consistent dimensions, so adjacent pieces line up cleanly.

Installation

VEVOR includes steel wire pliers and cut-resistant gloves, and says setup can take about 15 minutes. Cut ends can be sharp, so gloves are sensible. Hardware cloth is typically fixed with staples, zip ties, screws with washers or U-nails to a wooden or metal frame, and buried or folded outward at the base if you need to stop burrowing animals.

Where it is used

VEVOR lists gardens, pet enclosures and poultry cages. Common uses include covering raised beds, lining planters, building compost bins and protecting trunks. For any enclosure with animals, check that the mesh size and strength are right for the species you keep.

What to check before you buy

  • Length and width: measure the area; 24 inches may need a second row for taller barriers.
  • Mesh size: confirm 1/2 inch is small enough for the animals you want to exclude.
  • Strength: thicker wire is generally used against larger or more determined animals.
  • Frame and fixings: plan how you will attach it and seal the edges.
  • Handling: wear gloves and eye protection when cutting.

The short version

  • A 24 in x 50 ft roll of welded galvanized hardware cloth with black vinyl coating.
  • 1/2-inch square mesh in 19-gauge wire.
  • Pliers and cut-resistant gloves are included, per VEVOR.
  • Listed uses: garden fencing, pet enclosures and poultry cages.
  • About 12.1 lb for the whole roll.
