The VEVOR TBT-8080 is a camping tent that attaches to the rear of a vehicle, or stands alone as a regular tent. It is meant for SUVs, minivans and similar vehicles, extending the cargo area into a roomier shelter for a family or a group of friends. Here is what its specs mean in practice.

How a vehicle tent works

An SUV tent has an opening that wraps around the open hatch or tailgate. The vehicle's rear then becomes part of the living space, which is useful for sleeping, storage or getting changed out of the weather. VEVOR says the tent can be fitted to hatchbacks, or used on its own.

The brand lists compatibility with SUVs, minivans, crossovers, wagons, Jeep Wrangler hard tops and pick-up trucks with bed caps. Hatch shapes and sizes vary, so it is worth measuring your vehicle's opening.

Size and capacity

The listing gives the tent's dimensions as 94.5 x 94.5 x 90.6 inches (about 240 x 240 x 230 cm), and it weighs 16.7 lb (about 7.6 kg). VEVOR says it accommodates 6 to 8 people. Capacity claims for tents are usually counted by lying shoulder to shoulder, so for comfortable use with bags and gear, most people plan for fewer sleepers.

The interior height of roughly 90 inches means most adults can stand upright.

Waterproofing and weather

The flysheet is listed as PU2000 waterproof. This figure is the water pressure in millimetres that the fabric is tested to resist; 2000 mm is a common level for family camping tents, suited to ordinary rain. The tent has a double-layer construction, which VEVOR says resists wind, heavy rain and cold. The floor is a 120g fully sewn PE material with a waterproof pressing process.

The poles are 9 mm fibreglass, described as corrosion-resistant. VEVOR says the structure can withstand force 5 wind, which is a fresh breeze on the Beaufort scale. As with any tent, pitch it with all guy lines and pegs as the instructions describe, and take it down when conditions get rough.

Ventilation and light

High-density mesh windows are meant to improve airflow, and there is a skylight for a view of the sky. Mesh also helps with condensation, which builds up in any closed tent on a cool night.

Who it suits

It suits families and groups who travel by SUV or minivan and want more room than the vehicle provides, and campers who like the option to use the tent separately from the vehicle. It comes with a carry bag for storage.

What to check before you buy

  • Vehicle fit: measure the height and width of your hatch or tailgate and compare them with the sizing in the manual.
  • Ground: check you have room to pitch a tent of about 8 by 8 feet at your campsite.
  • Weather: PU2000 waterproofing suits ordinary rain; plan for the conditions you expect.
  • Capacity: decide how many people will really sleep in it, with gear.
  • Setup: read the instructions and practise pitching before the trip.
  • Care: dry the tent fully before packing it away.
