The VEVOR CPF-2500 is a pressurized biological pond filter with a built-in 13W UV-C lamp. It cleans water that a separate pump pushes through it, and it suits decorative ponds, fountains, pools and koi tanks. Here is what each part does and how to judge whether it fits a pond.
How a pressure filter works
A pressurized filter is a sealed canister. Pump-driven water flows in under pressure, passes through layers of sponge that trap solids and host beneficial bacteria, and returns to the pond. Because the canister is closed, it can sit at or above water level and feed a waterfall or other return. VEVOR says the unit needs to be connected to a pump to work.
Flow rate and pond size
VEVOR rates the filter at 1580 gallons per hour (6,000 litres per hour). It lists suitability for decorative ponds up to 1,600 gallons and fish ponds up to 800 gallons. The lower figure for fish ponds is typical: fish add waste, so a stocked pond usually needs more filtering capacity than an ornamental one. VEVOR says water can clear in about 3 to 7 days, though that depends on the pond.
Four sponge layers
Inside are four filter sponges of different densities. VEVOR says they remove suspended particles, sediment and organic matter. Coarser sponge catches larger debris first, and finer layers handle smaller particles. The sponge surface also supports bacteria that break down waste, which is what "biological" filtration means.
UV-C lamp
The 13W UV-C lamp is intended to help with water quality and algae-related cloudiness. It has three timing settings, which VEVOR says help you manage lamp life. Bulbs wear out over time, and the lamp here is replaceable. Never look at a UV-C lamp directly, and switch it off before opening the filter.
Cleaning and backwash
A switch on top lets you backwash the filter to flush trapped dirt. A crank handle operates an internal cleaning rod, so you can clean the sponges without opening the canister. A turbidity indicator on top floats up when the sponge needs attention. Both the sponge and the bulb are replaceable.
Build and fittings
The body is reinforced PP plastic, which VEVOR describes as resistant to sunlight, water and ageing. Three adapter sizes come included: 3/4 inch (1.9 cm), 1 inch (2.54 cm) and 1-1/4 inch (3.2 cm), to suit various hose and pipe sizes. The unit is about 15 x 15 x 22.6 inches and weighs 11.5 lb.
What to check before you buy
- Pond volume and stocking: compare the 1,600 and 800 gallon figures with your pond and fish load.
- Pump: you need a pump that matches the 1580 GPH flow figure and the adapter sizes.
- Location: it needs a level spot, shade if possible, and safe outdoor power for the UV lamp, following local electrical codes.
- Plumbing: check your hose diameter against the 3/4, 1 and 1-1/4 inch adapters.
- Upkeep: plan for regular backwashing and the replacement of sponges and the bulb.
- Winter: check the manual on storage and frost.
