This VEVOR pump is a portable 1.1 HP jet pump for moving clean water around a property. It runs on 115V, and VEVOR lists it for sprinkler and irrigation systems, drawing from shallow wells, ponds, lakes, rain barrels and tanks, and boosting water pressure.

What the numbers mean

VEVOR gives these figures:

  • Flow: 978 GPH maximum (gallons per hour), about 16 gallons a minute.
  • Head: 131 ft maximum, the height to which the pump can push water.
  • Pressure: 69.6 psi maximum.
  • Suction: 23 ft maximum.
  • Ports: 1-inch NPT inlet and outlet, with two hose adapters supplied.

Maximum flow and maximum head are not available at the same time. As a general rule, flow falls as the pump pushes water higher or against more pressure, so the real output on a given job will be lower than the headline flow. Suction lift also falls with altitude and with long or leaky inlet hoses.

Why "shallow well"

A jet pump sits at the surface and pulls water up through an inlet pipe by suction. Because suction is limited, shallow well pumps suit sources only a few metres below the pump, which matches the listed 23 ft (about 7 m) maximum. Deeper wells typically need a submersible pump or a deep-well jet system.

VEVOR also notes that the pump head must be filled with water before use. Running a jet pump dry can damage it, and it normally needs priming each time it's set up.

Materials and construction

The pump head is stainless steel and the housing is cast aluminium, which VEVOR says resists rust and corrosion. An iron handle makes it easy to carry between water sources. The pump measures 15.4 x 12.2 x 11.4 inches and weighs 16.9 lb (about 7.7 kg).

Motor and protection

The motor has built-in thermal and overload protection against overheating, and large cooling vents help dissipate heat. A waterproof on/off switch is designed to prevent accidental starts. The pump is IPX4 rated, which means it's protected against splashing water. That is not the same as being submersible, and it should sit in a dry, ventilated spot. VEVOR describes the motor as low-noise and energy-efficient.

Water type

VEVOR states the pump works only with clean water and is unsuitable for drinking water. Sand, silt and debris tend to wear a pump quickly, so use an inlet strainer or filter if your source is murky.

Who it suits

It suits gardeners with a lawn sprinkler, people drawing from a rain barrel or pond, small farms and anyone transferring water between tanks. It is not meant for deep wells or for supplying drinking water.

What to check before you buy

  • Lift and distance: measure the vertical height from the water to the pump and to the outlet, and the hose run.
  • Hose size: check that your hoses and fittings suit 1-inch NPT.
  • Power: it needs a 115V outlet; use a suitable, protected outdoor connection per the manual and local codes.
  • Priming: be ready to fill the pump head before each start.
  • Storage: drain it before freezing weather, as the manual advises.

The short version

  • A portable 1.1 HP, 115V shallow well jet pump.
  • Up to 978 GPH, 131 ft of head, 69.6 psi and 23 ft of suction.
  • Stainless steel pump head, cast aluminium housing, IPX4.
  • Thermal and overload protection; 16.9 lb with a carry handle.
  • For clean water only, not drinking water.
