The VEVOR CN-52G is a 52cc two-stroke petrol chainsaw with an 18 inch bar. It is a top-handle-style saw for cutting firewood, trimming and felling trees, and general work on a farm, woodlot or large garden. Here is what its numbers mean and what to confirm before choosing a saw like this.

What a 52cc two-stroke engine means

The 52cc figure is the engine's displacement. For chainsaws, 50cc and above is generally considered a size for heavier garden, farm and firewood work, with smaller saws suiting light pruning. VEVOR lists the engine at 2.55 HP (1.9 kW) at 8,500 RPM, with a maximum speed of up to 12,000 RPM.

A two-stroke engine mixes oil with the petrol, so it needs a premixed fuel in the ratio the manual specifies. Using the wrong mix is a common cause of poor running and engine damage, so follow the manual precisely.

The 18 inch bar and cutting diameter

The bar is 18 inches long. VEVOR gives a cutting diameter of 16.93 inches (430 mm), a little less than the bar length because the bar is not fully buried in the wood. VEVOR describes the bar and chain as high-strength steel and says the bar helps reduce sawdust splatter.

A useful rule of thumb is to choose a bar longer than the thickest log you will cut, because it lets you work from a stable position. Bigger trees can often be felled by cutting from both sides.

Fuel and chain oil tanks

There are two separate tanks. The fuel tank holds 0.58 US quarts (550 ml) and the chain oil tank holds 0.27 quarts (260 ml). The chain oil lubricates the bar and chain as they run, and it needs checking and refilling regularly. VEVOR says the fuel tank has a tough outer shell designed to resist rough conditions and leaks.

Vibration control

The saw has a built-in shock absorber, an anti-vibration system. VEVOR says it reduces vibrations and extends the life of the saw. Reduced vibration generally means less fatigue in long sessions, but breaks are still wise.

Starting and maintenance

Petrol two-stroke saws typically use a choke, primer bulb and pull cord to start. VEVOR notes that anyone with startup problems should contact its customer service. Fuel that has sat for months is a frequent cause of hard starting in any small engine, so fresh mixed fuel helps.

Regular upkeep generally includes sharpening or replacing the chain, cleaning the air filter and spark plug, checking chain tension and keeping the bar groove clear. The manual lists the schedule.

Size and weight

The saw measures about 16.1 x 9.8 x 11.2 inches (41 x 25 x 28 cm) and weighs 15.0 lb (about 6.8 kg), before fuel and oil. That is on the heavier side for a one-handed tool, so plan on using both hands.

Who it suits

It suits people with a property to maintain: firewood cutting, storm clean-up, felling small and medium trees, and farm work. Anyone who has not used a chainsaw before should look into training and proper protective equipment. Chainsaw work is hazardous; wear the protective gear the manual and local guidelines recommend.

What to check before you buy

  • Bar length vs. the work: compare the 18 inch bar with the typical diameter of your logs and trees.
  • Weight and handling: 15 lb is a lot over a long day, so think about your strength and experience.
  • Fuel: you will need two-stroke oil, petrol and chain oil, and a suitable, approved container to keep them in.
  • Protective gear: helmet, eye and ear protection, gloves, chainsaw trousers and boots.
  • Spares and parts: check that replacement chains and bars are available for this model.
  • Local rules: some areas restrict petrol equipment noise or hours of use.
