The VEVOR 7-in-1 Wi-Fi Weather Station pairs a 7.5-inch indoor display with a wireless, solar-powered outdoor sensor. It tracks conditions at your own location, instead of relying on a forecast for a town some distance away. That can be handy for gardeners, hobbyists and anyone who likes to know what the wind and rain are doing at home.
What the 7 in 1 means
The outdoor sensor measures temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed, wind direction and sunlight. The display adds readings derived from those, including dew point and moon phase, as well as a 6 to 12 hour forecast, according to VEVOR. In general, a home forecast of this kind is based on trends in pressure and other readings, so treat it as a short-term guide rather than a full meteorological forecast.
The display
The indoor unit has a 7.5-inch VA screen with four brightness levels, so you can dim it for a bedroom at night and brighten it for a living room during the day. The large size makes the readings easy to take in from across a room.
Wi-Fi and the app
The station connects to the Smart Life app, which lets you view, save, analyse and share your readings from anywhere. VEVOR says there is no need to register with a weather website, and that the app has no ads or paid plans. Two points from the listing matter at setup: the station supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only (5GHz isn't supported), and the power adapter must stay plugged in to connect to Wi-Fi and sync the date.
Solar power and batteries
The outdoor sensor has a solar panel that powers it on sunny days, with batteries taking over at night or when it is cloudy. VEVOR says the unit supports NiMH rechargeable batteries. It also lists upgrades to the internal components for better resistance to rainwater and a simplified installation. An aluminium alloy rod bracket and a charging box come with it.
Range and placement
The sensor transmits up to 492 ft (150 m) in open conditions, which VEVOR says suits rooftops, gardens and farms. Walls, trees and distance reduce range in real use. The listing advises keeping the sensor away from TVs, towers, power lines and other sources of interference, and says metal fences are not ideal for mounting. Most weather sensors give truer readings when mounted in the open, away from walls that trap heat, and with the rain gauge level.
Who it suits
It suits people with a garden, allotment or small farm, people who like to track rainfall over a season, and anyone who enjoys having a weather display in the house. If you only want a simple temperature reading, a plain thermometer is easier.
What to check before you buy
- Wi-Fi: confirm your router offers a 2.4GHz network.
- Mounting spot: find a place for the sensor that is open, away from interference and not on a metal fence.
- Range: the 492 ft figure is a maximum; think about walls between the sensor and the display.
- Sunlight: the panel needs reasonable sun to keep the batteries topped up.
- Power: the adapter should stay plugged in for the Wi-Fi connection.
- Upkeep: plan to clean the rain gauge and the panel from time to time, as the manual describes.
